10D vs S2, old story, new thread to provoke a response.

Given '1ds' 12mp picture is way better than S2 12mp picture, and is not expected to equate, I ask the following.

Please compare the 10d 6mp picture upsized by 40% and set at 300 ppi (or from 100% to 140%) to the S2 12mp at 300 ppi picture and provide an opinion.

If the 6mp is upsized by 40%, I ask the following...........allowing for slight differences in speed and weather and pollution etc between the shots......are they 'even stevens' ?

Does the S2 just tweak in, does the 10d gain significantly from its clarity to draw evenly, or does the S2 just provide that little bit more of significant detail ?

( assuming that 300 ppi and a4 size colour glossy prints magazine quality are needed )

Will the upsized picture hold up during the printing process ( assuming that 300 ppi and a4 size colour glossy print magazine quality are needed ) ?
Any opinions ?

Certainly the S2 picture could be upsized and so may indeed hold the 'upsize and cropping' advantage, but side by side what is the consensus ? Not that there are any winners and losers.

that the S2 is much more camera than the 10D. Different league. Ive owned both, sold my 10D and all lenses. The S2 is incredible at detail, sharpness (without the need for epxensive lenses) color and tone. It is incredible, and I am so glad I switched. Ive been a canon guy since the D30. Ill only upgrade when teh S3 comes out.

you'll also find people selling off their S2s and all their Nikon lenses and buying the 10D. If I were you, I'd buy a cheap compact flash card, find a camera store that has both, shoot some shots, and see which suits your style better.

There is not absolute answer..this one definitely falls into the "opinion not fact" bucket.

that the S2 delivers better images straight from the camera. The 10D images need postprocessing (on many occasions).

Further, you always tried to diss the 70-200 compared to your former 75-300, which was sharper at all times (your words). Well, that is a cheap lens, so apparently you didn't need an expensive lens on a 10D either....

Anyway, I am glad that you have found your ideal camera !

Good luck.

There are also a lot of people who have sold their other gear and are now regreeting doing so. Ive already spoke to 3 others who have sold the 10D. Ive had the 10D, Ive had the D30, D60 and about 15 other cams. WIthout a doubt, the absolute fact is that there is no comparison between the 10D and S2. They are in a totally different class. hell, I was happy as a clam shooting with the 10D, thought it was the best DSLR beyond the 1ds. The D100 did not entice me. To me, the 10D is better than the D100 - BUT once I handled and used the S2 there was no looking back. I bought a Nikon 18-35 lens for $500 and it is small, lightwieght and give me photos 10X sharper than my 16-35L ever did on the S2. Unfortunately, with the 10D, to get the best out of it you need to invest thousands in lenses.

Anyway, the 10D is awesome. It is also $1500 and that is an incredible price. The S2 is $2k, so its $500 more. Its better but more$.

it's a fact that the S2 beats the 10D hands down? well, if that's the case, you should have no problem convincing the hundreds participants and the thousands of lurkers on this forum to switch! After all, if the facts prove that it's better in every situation and circumstance, then you'd be doing us all a favor by proving it to all of us and all the professional reviewers who prefer the S2 over the 10D! ;-)

if you are going to offset I would stay with the 10D just for the wider color space. As for detail they both hold up well, the S2 has no more then 6 million pieces of info to make a picture from, its 1's and 0's even though they will explain that 6 million 1's and 0's actually equal 12 million but only for them. I have always preffered to do my own upsampling and sharpening and never really liked in amera canned effects.

I will say the S2 looks better out of the camera, nicer tones, tough this is very subjective the difference between accurate and good color.

Now this is my oppinon I personally have seen D30 shots go to billboards let alone full bleed pages no problems, neither the 10D nor S2 would have any problem doing it, as far as lenses the 10D produces good results with any sharp lens but needs a good canon USM to focus fast, the s2 will focus the same with any lens. I have some upsample actions for the 10D I have yet to put up online but I will soon and they wrok great for huge sizes.

Stephen,

I'm a fan of your interpolation actions. Thank you for donating them to the community at large (no pun....well, actually, the pun is intended I guess ;-).

I look forward to your 10D actions.
