I think you are failing to consider the percentages here. Of all the 10Ds sold in the past month (it has to be in the thousands!) how many complaints do you see and how many perfectly happy users simply haven't posted anything on the forum. I had the same "feeling" before I bought my D30 21/2 years ago then realized the small percentage of buyers who were actually having problems. For the most part, you are going to see far more complaints of the forum then you will people simply saying "I'm happy with my 10D." I think you are far and away more likely to get a perfectly fine machine if you bought one today - the percentages are clearly in your favor. Get it! Enjoy it! It's a geat camera!

... there are also MANY positive posts about the 10D. It's just that the complainers are too busy trying to spread their misery whilst the people who ENJOY their 10Ds are out using them. It's a fact that the squeaking wheels get more grease and that's what you're seeing here. It's also a fact that, with anything you buy, there's a chance you'll get a defective unit. That's just the state of doing business in these days of price cutting while trying to maintain the same profit margin. Some people deal with it and some cry about it.

I am very happy with this camera. Just because I am happy with it, it does not mean that I can not criticize the weaknesses in the camera.
The AF is my key concern. It is NOT as good as the EOS5. My EOS has always been dead on. I find that 10D is not as accurate, and is definitely slower. Since my reference point is EOS 5/A2E, I do not really care if it is better than the D60.
Also, this is a half height camera and caused cramps in the palm of my hand (unlike EOS 5) until I installed the portrait grip. With the grip attached it is not bad. How can they actually make the grip worse on a newer camera? I just do not understand. EOS 5 had the perfect grip.
I love the 10D and plan to make it my backup camera when the EOS 3D (or something like that) comes out.

My D60 was great but the 10D is better. Where do you get the" Short Courses for
Canon 10D book?"

I think the vast majority of 10D owners are happy. I absolutly love mine. I believe that many of the initial complaints were from people that did not fully understand the camera.
Many of the focus issues have been user errors such as low shutter speeds, DOF too shallow, camera shake, or lens problems.

you need to go elsewhere or skip 2/3 of the posts here if you want to find the folks who are actually quite happy with their 10D.

Yes, so far it's very good, better than the D60 that I also liked very much.
BTW, this question has been addressed before. Search the forum for "happy". Many, many people expressed satisfaction. As for how to test the camera in the store, look at the many posts on testing autofocus, as that's probably the only function you really need to check out before taking the camera home.
