Hello,

Can anyone recommend an online shop to get replacement ink for my canon i850 in Australia. I am very happy with the genuine ink but want to cut costs. Inkjetgoodies seems to be the most popular in the US but I'm not sure on costs and time to get that shipped from the US to AU.

As for paper I have used the canon PPP and its excellent, the canon photo paper glossy is also very good as is the epson photo glossy, ilford classic smooth and pearl. I wasn't happy with the Office Works 250GSM paper (too grainy). If anyone knows of any other cheaper/better paper I would be interested to know/try. My other question is what type of printer settings do people use for different papers, for example do you use canon PPP settings with epson paper??? or do you use the generic glossy paper setting.

thanks for your comments.

Hi ctn

What paper settings do you use on your printer when using the office works paper? Does the paper seem quite oily to you? Does it take some time to dry when for you? It seem quite sticky/oily (hard to explain) even 4 hours after printing unlike the epson or canon papers.

I used photo paper plus glossy.

When I used PPP setting, I got major banding.

It didnt dry right away, it took a few hours to dry completely.

Fotozet photo premium gloss is pretty good. It produces sharp prints but its not very bright.

Most gloss type paper are sticky to touch.

Cheers

As you can tell i am a newbie ... what is a good ink and what is a bad ink? How do I know what ink to use and what inks to avoid? Is there somewhere I can read about this?

Im a newbie myself.

I go by word of mouth. If many people say that "ink a" is good. it usually is :).

I went in to the shop(inkme) to check it out and they really have alot of stock. Like 3 groups came in while I was there to buy ink from him.

Unfortunatlly the only two reliable ways I know of are word of mouth or be a lab rat. Somebody had to be the first here to try inkjet goodies. Others had to be the ones to try it when few had. I started using it because I saw it recomended here. I now freely recomend it to anyone that asks because my experiences have been great and everybody elses seem to have been the same.

Some inks can be terible for your printer and can permanantly clog your head. For hp and lexmark users there is less risk than us epson and canon users with permanent print heads. What they pay for ink carts with print heads though, it adds up to enough to get a couple permanant print heads in the long run.

It is not just is the ink good quality. Even a good quality ink can ruin your print head such as putting a pigment ink in a dye based printer. You want a ink that is specifically designed for your printer. Avoid inks that claim to work with any printer like the plague. Even if a ink wont clog your printer, will it flow properly and give good color in your printer.

My sugestion if you are looking at a particular ink is search the forum here. There is a LOT of information on all those old threads. Ask about it (which you have). Try other sites and forums too. If you find enough people that have used it you will get an idea of how well it works. If you cannot find enough people that have tried it, then your only choice is to be the lab rat or look for another alternative. If you do try it please share your experiences good or bad. Down the road somebody else will be interested in that ink and the information you post will be there to help them when they search.
Just my two cents worth.
