Happy to report that I just got my 512mb memory stick pro for my 717
and I am ohh so happy with it. 194 photos in hi-res, not to mention the
5 hours of movies I could do (in small mode). Even still 22min of
movies in HQX mode is handy. The 128mb stick takes a little while to
format - the 512 - is very very fast. Got mine off ebay $235.00.
Now I can go on a long weekend (3-4 days) and NOT take my laptop if I don't want
and still get over 190 photos....

I'm debating whether to get the MS Pro 256MB, or just 2 regular MS 128's. Is the write time faster? (Time between shots?). Any other advantages?

Thanks,
R2

Do you notice any speed differences (shot-to-shot times, startup, etc.) between the 512 and 128 sticks when operating the camera?

David,

Could you please job my feeble memory. Is this the one that you have to slide a switch to use the other half or do you use it just like any other memory stick?

Thanks

Scott

dv13 - nope - I don't use any readers, I just plug in the camera. But
I bet it is either a driver issue or hwd on the dazzle. I'd look for an
updated driver - if not you will prob have to purchase a new reader.

Shad0w - There are a few moon shots up there - the better shots
were with a starmax 127 EQ scope and a scopetronics adapter (maxview 40)
for the 717/707 - I got the best results with that setup.
check out http://www.scopetronics.com/ look a the front
page and see the maxview II/40 ?? (along with the 707/717 in the photo)
  • worth the extra $$ and works well (as you see in the results)
but the skys here in Dallas TX are not very good (to much light).
(BTW the 127 is from Orion

http://www.telescope.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=373&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=4&iSubCat=10&iProductID=373 ) I have since then sold the scope, because I have been thirstin for
more power/features - just have to let the pocket book catch up.
(the mead 10" GPS is next on the list)

R2 I was in the same boat - went with the 512. As far as speed - the
formating time blew me away - I can't get my fingers off the okay
button and it is finished!!! To make sure, I dug out my older 16, 32, 64
sticks and tried them - the 512 is way way faster at formating then
any of them. I have done a few downloads - they seem faster but it
could just be me. I am still using USB 1 and have NOT tired the ver 2.0
on the F717 yet (some day I'll tear my PC apart and hook up the USB
ports and try ver 2 - my Mac is still at 1) As far as shot times hard to
tell - again the 512 seems a tad bit faster, but I would have to try
better conditions. Bottom line is I like the room on the stick and
now I have a stick that matches up nice with a GREAT battery.

Actually, that model probably doesn't support the new MSPro format. It is a completely different signalling system than the older, non-Pro (

Also, I didn't know that the 717 had MSPro compatibility, I was waiting for a 717 sucessor to come out! I guess I'll be picking up my 717 right away.

--I also got mine off Ebay for $242 with shipping. It is a darn nice M/S.

I don't understand the hoopla over the larger size memory sticks. Right now, on Buy.com, you can purchase a 128mb MS for $33.99, with no shipping. You could have bought 4 of them, totalling 512mb of storage capacity for $100 less than you paid for the 512. I don't think speed of formatting quite justifies that. In a year's time, I have never had the need to reformat any of my memory sticks.

Been using a Lexar USB reader for my 128mb sticks. The Pro sticks did not work so I emailed Lexar, they said that their current readers will only go to 256mb. They claim they have a new reader that will do the Pro sticks. I did not wait and got two of the Sony readers that do work with Pro sticks. I also got the latest PCMCIA adapter for the laptop and it reads both my 512 and 1gig Pro sticks without a problem.

In the end it is worth the trouble to me as I can go on long trips and not worry about even changing the stick much less downloading it. I never liked the portable stick downloading devices. I am so tired of keeping all my devices charged and I did not want another.
