If you want a similar FOV to what you get with a 50mm in film cameras, try the AF-D 35mm f/2. It is a superb lens, better IMO than any of the 2 50mm available in Nikons' line.

The 50mm 1.8D is a great lens for about $100 -- it's price/performance is hard to beat. The 50mm 1.4D is also a great lens but at $300 is a bit more expensive. Be aware, both of these lenses are built in China. The 35mm mentioned in another post is a great lens too...Mike

I recieved my 50mm f/1.8D in the mail just the other day from B&H. I have found that just from a few simple test shots and playing around the lens is quite sharp and like mentioned before, is hard to beat for $100 US. I could not see spending the extra money for the 1.4, and I have read on this forum and lens review web sites that the 1.8 is actually a bit sharper than the 1.4. I recommend this lens, the contrast and sharpness are great, the build quality is about what you expect when you pay $100, but it does not feel like a piece of junk. I'm happy with mine and am anticipating some better weather to use it some more in the coming days. Hope this helps some.

If you can work with a manual-focus lens, the best lens for both wide-aperture and middle-to-small aperture work at all distances, with the best defocused character, flare control, and sharpness is the 45mm f/2.8P. If you can't, then decide what is the most important usage for the lens -- if you are at all into close work I'd highly recommend the 60mm Micro. If you want a lens that does a fairly good job at wide apertures, but is optimized for medium-aperture work at distance, then there is little better than the inexpensive 50mm f/1.8D.

I'd really suggest considering the 45mm f/2.8P though -- it's beautifully built, and yields exceptional results between f/2.8 and f/11 at all distances from about 3 feet to infinity, it weighs nothing and focuses quickly due to the short throw.

Hi

I was patient and shopped around the local used camera stores until the right price and condition showed up. I laid my hands an a used 50mm F1.4 (Made In Japan) and I have not looked back. I recently bought a used 28mm and it to is a good solid preformer. Both are simply excellent preformers. I have come to the conclusion that the Nikon prime lenses yield superior results with my D100. I stress my because this may not be the case for everyone.

Cheers. Terry.

I recently spoke with a photog who uses the D100 for pro work. He told me that on a digital camera, the 1.8 and 1.4 are identical and that the 1.4 is not worth the extra $$$. On film cameras, he said that there is a difference.

Hmm, I just picked up my 50 1.8. I am very happy with it. I didn't get a chance to try the 1.4 so I have nothing to compare.

Any thoughts on this?

I have both lenses and I use D100 and I can't really see the difference in the two the only thing I do notice is the 1.4 seems to be a better built lens then my 1.8 and the 1.4 is a bit better in lower lighting conditions. I have some pic's I could email of the 1.8. Just let me know I will send them to ya. Email is [email protected] , Let me know. I say save your money and get 1.8 . Good Luck

...and it is truly hard to tell the difference. I see no difference in sharpness, and I think the 1.8 is has a bit better build quality (my 1.4 has a small chatter when maually focusing). Both the 1.4 and 1.8 have 7 bladed aperatures, and similar bokeh. The 1.4 has a focus distance window and DOF indicators, and the 1.8 has the same information printed in the rotating focus wheel. Looks wise, the 1.8 wins -- it's matte grey enamel lettering is more attractive than the glossy white of the 1.4. The 1.4 is definitetly the heftier lens -- I'd guess almost 1.5x the weight of the 1.8.

All in all, unless you have a specific requrement for the faster lens, buy the 1.8.

Hope this helps...Mike
