I'm In the middle of a business trip and I have the weekend off. I am in Sacramento and plan to spent the weekend in the Lake Tahoe area. Suggestions for scenic sites or any prime picture-taking vantage points would be appreciated.

Take (I believe) 89 around the CA side of the lake until you come to Emerald Bay - beautiful area. Also , if the day is clear, consider going up on some ski lifts for georgeous ove all views of the lake.

When looking for beautiful scenery it's hard to go wrong around Tahoe. This is an especially good time for picture-taking because the roads should be clear around the lake but there should be plenty of snow up on the peaks. I suggest driving around the lake and visiting some of the parks along the shore. You'll get a number of different vantage points for photography that way. You'll also learn about Tahoe ecology if you read the informational plaques.

I have friends in Sacremento with a time-share at lake tahoe. Here it is:

Hmmm.

The snow will just be leaving. I'd certainly try for shots from the top of Heavenly or the summit of Northstar, especially the side facing Squaw. But you can also get a good glimpse of the lake from the North Ridge:

You'll also get nice sunset shots from South Lake Tahoe. Don't lose it all in the casinos!

I once got a good shot at the north end of the Lake when it was blowing really hard, but that's not too common.

The Truckee will be quite full at this time of year, due to the snow melt. You can get good shots anywhere along it.

If you like marshes and wildlife, there's a recreational area just NW of South Lake Tahoe with trails through a variety of terrain (easy stuff). You might also get some interesting shots at the marina, depending on what's going on.

I've always been fascinated with the way the train tracks snake alongside the Truckee and the snow sheds covering them. The snowsheds won't be shedding any snow, but I bet they'd make wonderful photo venues if you found a way across the truckee to get close to them. I haven't tried this, and will put it on the list for my next visit out there (after winning the lottery).

Hope this helps. Have fun!

John,

If you're taking 80 up there, look for Donner Lake, before you turn-off to Truckee. It's very scenic and there's not much traffic or tourists. Also, I agree with Eric about the snowsheds. Even the town of Truckee would be a nice place to shoot. Quaint and rustic.

If you take 50 up there, then you will see many nice places to pull over and shoot some. Also, the view from the summit at Heavenly Valley, is just that, heavenly. The lake on one side and high desert on the other.

Have a ball and don't lose too much $, (come on 7....baby needs a new Memory Stick Pro...LOL)

'If one really wishes to be master of an art, technical knowledge of it is not enough. One has to transcend technique so that the art becomes an 'artless art' growing out of the Unconscious.'

Actually go prepared for snow. We here in NCal have been experiencing lots of storms lately with snow levels as low as 2500 feet. The Tahoe basin is much higher than that. I suspect it will look more like Eric's pics. You might not need those chains, gloves, parkas . . . but then again if you do . . . Have fun! Cindy

I do not plan to visit the tables, camera poor you know. I do hope to get lucky with the picture taking game and will post any keepers. Eric, thanks for the great pics.

Yosemite next week end. I am told it is against the law to take a bad pcture in the park.

good for you, going to two of the prettiest places i've ever been.....as others have said, there is a ton of snow in the sierra now so don't expect it to look like spring. the weather is supposed to be fantastic, in fact it's going to be so good i'm going up there for one last day of skiing with my 8 year old son.

yosemite just takes my breath away every time i have to priviledge of going....

You've gotten really great suggestions that I heartily second. I'll add that you might keep your eye open for safe turnouts on the highway whatever route you take. There's gorgeous scenery between Sacramento and the Lake with many photo opportunities. Drive slow, turn out often, and enjoy both the journey and destination.
