I was actually quite sure of my choise, I had it norrowed down to 7i, but when I talked to this guy at the shop yesterday, he said that they temporarily stopped with these camera's due to unexpected technical problems (different kinds of electronic failures). Now I'm not sure anymore.

Does anyone of you heard of these kind of problems?

Those problems were found on cameras manufactured last (2002) spring and the problem was addressed with a recall of certain serial #'s. Do a search on this forum to find out which batches they were or go directly to the Minolta site; they are listed there as well. My guess is that the recalled cameras are now out of the supply chain. I purchased my 7i in mid March 03 and the serial # is well out of the recall range. The camera performs flawlessly.

I bought mine in December 2002 and for some reason it appears to be artistically inept. Not one single iota of creative genius.

That said, the functionality on it is outstanding. Does everything. In fact, it's doing the dishes right now.

Seriously, there are no problems now, ditto what Don said.

Buy it, it's an outstanding camera

Bought mine December 2002 as well. Only problem with this camera is that I can't use it to its fullest potential. If you want examples of how good it can be you should see pictures taken by some of the ladies that post on this site. Excellent camera and prob the next best thing to a DSLR.

Camera shops like to make profits first and sell people what they need second. There was a recall for a faulty Mode dial and instances of cracks in the bodies of the 7Hi. But you will buy the camera with a warranty, won't you?

With the others there is the constant tech-failure of not having a 28mm end to the zoom and not having a decent manual focusing ring and zoom ring.
I'd buy another 7i again - even with the Canon 10D strutting its stuff.

As with doctors and mechanics, get a second opinion. A salesman may be biased and or misinformed. And my local store still has the discontinued D7 and S-404 cameras in the display case. The guy actually said (in late March) that the S-414 was not yet released.

There were minor problems early on. Those were resolved by Minolta. Don't know of any at late.
I have the D7i (since June last year) and am thrilled with it.

Can't tell you what to buy, but if you have your heart set on the D7i, and the store to which you made reference does'nt have it, I would certainly search elsewhere, rather than purchase a different model that they might be pushing.

I bought my 7i about 6 weeks ago. It has worked flawlessly, I am contilually being astounded with what it can do. Today I took a picture of a 35mm slide from an old slide viewer and it turned out great. I also began using the 71 as a substitute for my scanner. The results are more consistant.

bought mine in February - no problems up to now ;-)
in fact, it's a really great camera. I just love it.

Michael,

I've seen prior posts regarding the taking of photographs of slides with the D7XX cameras. If it isn't too much to ask, could you comment on how to go about doing this? I've got a box full of slides I took in the 70s in West and East Berlin (Cold War Stuff) I'd like to transpose to digital and then print out to a hard copy on my printer.

Thanks in advance,

Michael G.

Thank you all, yes I intended to get a 'second opinion', but I'm glad to have heard a the users-view on it too. Actually, that salesguy wanted to sell me a basic camera rather than a 7i (however a fuij 602z doesn't really suck) but it good to hear that the problems are in the past (he did mention a incident of a 13 month old camera). And incidental there's always a possibility of error but that's warrenty for ya right.

But if Minolta's service is as good as the camera, there's no worrie then?

Thanks again, good to know that if all else fails, I can get it to do my dishes for me!

We don't got no stinking tech problems. Seriously, my experience with most camera salesman is they want to sell what they have in stock or what has the highest kickback[spiff], not what is the best camera or what you need.

I am about to purchase my third 7i, my first two have over 10k frames each and are working flawlessly. I use these for production work, shooting for hours at a time with a $20 radio shack power supply.

Ps, the much maligned microdrive also works consistently.
