I have an 80-200 ED IF non-AF-S. The one with the tripod collar. Not the push pull. I think it focuses pretty quickly, but could certainly be faster. I also have the 24-85G AF-S, so I do have a sense as to how much quicker the AF-S is on the D100. Wanted to get some feedback from people who have used the Sigma lenses with HSM to find out what the focus speed is like. Considering Sigma for my next long lens, so wanted to find out. Thanks.

Ejoy,

I have the Sigma 70-200 APO HSM and I find it very fast focusing. As I have described in another thread I had to send the lens back to Sigma just shortly after receiving it from B & H Photo. Apparently this particular lens is temperamental when matched with the D100 only. It works fine with all other Nikon SLR film bodies. To remedy this they upgrade the chip in the lense. After they upgraded my lens it seems to focus faster (really quick!) with more accuracy, and is definitely more consistent in low light. I concede that the Nikkor equivalent may outperform the Sigma but it should for the money. My goal is to eventually use all Nikkor lenses but until then lenses like the Sigma 70-200 APO HSM offer great value/performance for the penny pinching crowd.

Yeah would love to see some photos. I just came back from the camera shop, and I grabbed one of their N80s and mounted the 300mm F4 AF-S Nikon and the 50-500 HSM Sigma, and the AF-S was clearly quicker and hunted less. To your point, for the price, it SHOULD! Non-scientific comparision but I didn't think the 50-500 was that much faster in focusing than my current 80-200 without the AF-S. It was a little quicker, but not remarkably. It was MUCH quieter though. It will be interesting to see others views on this.

Hi everybody,

the 70-200 is for me to less. I photograph in stadiums. So I think it should be at least the Sigma 120-300 HSM. Does anybody know how this lens performs?

Thanks in advance,

Danny
