D1X 10MP output comparison re-hash

The contenders should be

Nikon Caputure
Adobe Photoshop Raw plugin (free trial NOT available)
Adobe "tools"
Bibble (free trial available)
Phase One - Capture One DSLR (free trial available)
QImage (free trail available)

did I forget any?

Then compare with other > = 10mpix cams.. ;-)

Competition suggested rules :

1. Take ONE RAW file - of subject with lot of details/colors etc.
(share the raw file with the forum..)
2.Import in "tool" - save with default "tool" settings (10 mpix)
(the objective test) in 16 bit tiff
3. Save "optimized" (after adjusting WB etc) - (the subjective
test) in 16 bit tiff

best

That would be cool if you did. I don't have bibble, so I am really
interested in the results you get. I am also going to try the small
percentage step interpolation in PS. But, as dave illustrated, PS
(or anything else) can't interpolate what it can't 'see'.

Here's another comparison test image.

The test samples are:
  • NEF 6MP, NC, 6MP, interpolated to 10MP in PS using 110% method
  • NEF 10MP, NC
  • JPG FINE, NC, 6MP, interpolated to 10MP in PS using 110% method
  • NEF 10MP, Bibble
The results are quite interesting. NEF 10MP in NC is by far the best.
Bibble is not doing very well, at least, not in this test.

Look at the WWW in the first samples... Very interesting!

Photos were shot with a mounted flash. Camera on the tripod. Focus was done once and then put on manual so it wouldn't change.
No sharpening was done in either capture software.

The final comparisson enlargement samples were saved with Photoshop in JPG quality 11.

The overall image was reduced and saved in JPG just as a visual reference of what was cropped for the samples.

That is a great comparison Dr.

I just got the D1X and Capture 3.5 a week ago and was wondering what interpolation sofware to get. Looks like I can look no further, and as it turns out I don't have to look at all as I have NC already.

Not to discount all else in this fourum especially 'Moon' who started it and brought it up in the first place. But it was very clear to me in the Dr. post.

Thanks one and all.

Glad to see my comparisson test was helpful in your decision.

To be honest, before Moon brought up the subject of NC3.5 doing the best 10MP interpolation job for our D1X images, I was not looking into this subjet at all. I was shooting all the time in JPG FINE and using either Stair Interpolation(SI) in PS or the 110% interpolation technique, I was enlarging my files that way. But Moon's sample test showed me the big difference between SI from 6MP to 10MP and NC3.5 10MP. The difference looked quite big. I could only imagine the difference it would make from my JPG FINE to a NEF file in NC3.5 !

My test that contains NEF files are NEF COMPRESSED files. I tried also with a NEF UNCOMPRESSED, but I couldn't find any difference between compressed and uncompressed- at least, not in my opinion. Since uncompressed takes so much more space than Nef Compressed, it seems only like an obvious choice to go with Nef Compressed.

From now on, I'm shooting Nef Compressed all the way.

Between this example and Dave's (both of which blew mine away), I think there is no question which app is the clear winner.

Glad to have my thoughts confirmed!
