I have been cruelly tempted to go DSLR I have the opportunity to buy a D60 at £899 GBP or think about the 10D the majority of my picas are indoor sports and used for various reasons, I still cant get over how well my 707 copes with gymnastics and trampolining, even at ISO400. I would probably keep my 707 as it isnt worth much even with 4 128mb ms remote and 3 spare batteries etc.

My question is has anyone else felt like this and jumped and enjoyed it or regretted it?

I would like to here, anyway the STF is far friendlier than the other forums bar Fuji I have to say perhaps another reaason to stay.

After using the Nikon D1 and D1x I decided I wanted to carry less weight on my everyday photo trips and I downsized to the 717. Don't get rid of your 707 as you will find yourself going back to it after using the DSLR for a while. I am not the only one to do this either.

Hey John,

I think I might hold off a bit to see if the 10D has any bugs. I'm concerned that the reported focusing problems in the D60 may be disappointing to you, even compared with the 707.

I wonder how easy it is to stay familiar enough with 2 different cameras (like the 7*7 and a DSLR) to where a person could expect to use either one when the mood struck and not have to read the owner's manual. I feel like I could pick up my old Olympus OM-1 and use it, but it's a pretty simple operation by comparison.

Maybe someone who actually uses 2 cameras has an opinion.

I went with the D60 about a month ago. And I love it. I still have my 707 and will keep it for when I go hiking and want a lighter camera.

there is a huge learnign curve in getting used to the DSLR but its well worth it.

I say go for it....you will love it.

Isn't worth much? A quick check of completed eBay auctions shows the 707 selling for $550. - 650. With extras they go for even more... I estimate your kit would do 750. - 800.

I mean, as long as you are keeping the 707, you know that you're going to get great shots, no matter what. So you won't be missing anything, or much, as you learn the D60/10D, IMO.

"Has anyone else felt like this?"

Only everyday :-( But I agree with William. I'm waiting for the 10D issues to die down (front focus, rear focus, no focus....lol) Then I will be jumping, too. But I will keep the 717 for it's portability and versatility (and IR capability :-(

So good luck to you and keep us updated on how you're progressing up that ole "learning curve" :-)

How does the D60 perform in low light situations?
Have you used it for sports?

I was going on what the camera shops are willing to offer in PX ebay is an option but i have a gut feeling that i should keep the 707 as a backup and an occasional camera.

John,

If you are into sports a dslr is a must have. I did fine with consumer digicams (717 being the best of them) but it was always hit and miss due to the slow focus and shutter lag. A good dslr (minimum of at least a D10) is made for sports. I now am able to capture at will, precisely what I see in the view finder. Go for it.

I'm sure there are some legitimate complaints but the majority are from user inabilities. The 10D (any dslr) definitely has a long learning curve. But the benefits are more than worth it.

John, here are some of the first low light shots I have done with the D60 using the flash.

http://www.james-benton.com/other/doranne/dorane.html

pics 2, 3 and 4 I did not use a flash and the were WAY underexposed so I converted them to B&W.

Some are not real sharp or a little out of focus, but I think they came out ok for my first attempt at this lighting situation.

What is real difference between 717 and 10D AF speed???

According to Phil's reviev Sony has about 0.6s full wide and 10D has 0.6s at 5EV. So I don't se any difference here. So far I've played only with EOS 30 film camera and think it had a bit faster AF (at 28mm on 28-105 f3,5-4,5 lens) (I think EOS 30 is also faster than 10D). Shutter lag on my 717 is also almost didn't exist. I've turned off all sounds and now I hear shutter a moment after full press (faster than fake shutter sound). For me the real reasons to go into DLSR world are:
1. DOF (can be really small).
2. Lenses (400-500mm without and converters)
2. Noise (less important, but... :-)

So, back to question: John, what is Your personal experience with AF speed and shutter lag?

Hello John.

The 707 has been good for me, but I look back at some shots I've taken with lesser cameras and I'm reminded that its not the camera, its the person holding it that 'makes' the picture.

I have a friend who takes much better action shots than I do - and his camera is much slower than mine! (I should know - I sold it to him!) So, I'm inclined to wait. Not because I can't make up my mind, but because the rate of change is so fast. Perhaps soon there will be some major differences (ones that actually bring some benefit) in affordable cameras, and perhaps some of those will come from Sony.

If you do buy something new keep visiting STF. Tell us and show us what differences you find.

bye for now

Well I just jumped into the dSLR world myself after much worry and concern about doing so. I bought a 10D and couldn't be happier !! I'm keeping my F717 as my "point and shoot" (never thought I would call it that) for easy of use and being able to take it places the 10D can't go.

I say go for it!
