I took some pictures during my lunch break and after work with my brand new B+W slim 49 mm circular polarizer. I did some post processing (adjusting for levels and eliminating some noise with Digital GEM).

Here here my thoughts on the B+W 49 mm cp:

Overall, I like the quality compared to my Tiffen 62 mm CP.
Cannot put another filter on top of it; CP comes with own lens cap.
A tad of vignetting on the wide angle.

BTW, I bought a slim B+W 49 mm uv too, that one comes with a lens cap as well.

did you had vigneting with the 62mm PL? It is a bummer to pay for a thin 49mm PL and still have some vigneting...did the 62mm setup produce vigneting when attached directly to the lens?

Also what is the difference in quality of the photo? they seem a little blurred, was that casued by the denoising process?

Hi Daniella,

The Tiffen 62 CP with the step up ring DID NOT vignette on the 7Hi even at the wide angle. However, once I put my Hoya 49 mm UV underneath the step up ring, it did vignette.

I still prefer the B+W 49 mm CP because I hate carrying a lot of stuff (i.e. step-up rings) in my camera bag.

I recently purchased Digital GEM, primarily to remove noise and grain (I still shoot with slide film with my Maxxum 7). I guess I went overboard but I prefer this 'look' compared to noisy and grainy pics.

Best regards,

José

I also have the 49mm B&W slim CP. There is only a small amount of vigneting at wide angle (easliy fixed in Photoshop). Like Jose, I don't like having to mess with step-up rings.

I love this CP. It really makes the colors pop.

José,

I also have both B+W filters and did some testing.
With the circular pol. I find it hard to see it's effect through the EVF.
Not only noticing the effect, but also turning the filter optimize it.

Any tips on that one? Sometimes I just keep turning the filter not knowing the difference. They did'nt include a manual :-)

PS. I use NeatImage for removing the noise and it works perfect, retaining the sharpness. Take a look at: http://www.dfso.nl/Foto/page_01.htm

Thanks,

Theo

Hi Theo, I've used the B+W cp just on one occasion and I did not have this problem. This was on a bright and sunny day and I can see the effect of the filter as I turn the wheel. Having said that, the Dimage 7Hi's EVF is vastly inferior compared to my Maxxum 7 viewfinder.

Regards,

José

Did you try it in a variety of conditions? I can usually see the darkening well enough to find the optimum filter orientation, but on some occasions, probably in bright sunlight, it can be a little hard to see.

Hi Jose,

I was interested to learn how the B+W C-PL performs with the camera. I have the slim 49mm B+W MRC UV and it does not vignette. Excellent quality.

I have a standard 49mm B+W 49ES C-PL (front threads), and it does vignette from about 36 to 50mm. I will be replacing it with the 55 or 62mm B+W MRC C-PL. Have you tried a 55mm filter on?

Some people here remarked that have to deal with the step-up rings is a hassle. I wonder why since you do filter dismantling anyways.

Cheers,

Here is my little daymoon from about lunchtime yesterday, not a cloud in the sky, forgot the trees. No filters or anything, just the little moon.

Hi Max,

I am partially disappointed that I could not stack a filter on top of the B+W slim UV 49mm. I was hoping that I could attach my B+W slim CP 49mm on top of it. However, just like you and Blake, I marvel at the quality of B+W filters----they're simply top notch. My neutral density filter (0.9) is also B+W 49mm.

I guess to each his own about the use of step-up rings, as much as possible, I try to avoid using one and keep my filters the same size as the lens thread. I don't have any experience with the B+W 55mm. Previously, I was using a Tiffen 62mm CP filter.

Best regards,

José
