Coolpix 4500 - can't delete pictures

I've had my Coolpix 4500 for 3 months but last week on holiday had a strange problem. After downloading a set of pictures, I tried to delete them using Windows Explorer, which is what I've done before. The files didn't get deleted but simply changed to 0 bytes in length. This now causes problems.

Can anyone suggest what I could do to get rid of these unwanted files (out, out damned spot!)

The memory chip should Format properly from within the camera.
Change your chipflush to this procedure from now on.

Format the card in the camera. That should get rid of everything.

Have you checked with Digital Image Recovery? I've just used it on a card which has been used on 2 cameras and despite the CF card being formatted for the 2nd. camera, I found images from the 1st. camera.
I now use McAfee's shredder.
