Man this site is helpful, and unfortunately, thought provoking.

Here's the situation, my wife and I are first time digital camera purchasers. We are looking for a camera to take our everyday, point and shoot shots (basically to replace out 35mm Elph). After reading everything on here we decided to go with the P8. It seems that 3 mega pixels is enough for our type of useage.

HOWEVER, a few individuals have suggested that for the extra $100.00 we should consider moving up to the P10. Any helpful suggestions on this. The two cameras essentially are the same except for the obviously increased megapixels (and sensor size P10 - 1/1.8 versus P8 - 1.27). Will we realize the benefit of this now, or in the long run?

I plan on purchasing this weekend so any advice would be very much greatly appreciated. Thanks!

FYI - the P10 is not available yet and won't be out until June I believe.

Remember, more pixels does not necessarily mean more image resolution. If you notice in the reviews on this site, each camera is tested against a resolution chart to see where the limit of the cameras ability to resolve detail is. If the 5MP sensor has lower actual resolution or more noise, that means it's not quite as valuable as it would be if it had the same or better quality as the 3MP sensor. But, if they are the same quality then those 2 extra megapixels would be nice. It will allow for higher quality large prints, or the ability to crop your image and still get a good 4X6 or 5X7 print.

thanks for the info, I'll have to look more into that. Also, as the other person pointed out, I kind of assumed that the P10 was available when in fact, I only know that the P8 is currently available in my area.
