I am having trouble in getting sharply focused pictures from my S414. I have tried programmed metering and spot metering (both in auto focusing mode) but get similarly uneven results (about 50% good and the rest bad). Most of the shots were taken with the subject (8-15 feet away) in partial shade (shape contrast); I am sure it is not due to shaking as the shutter speed was greater than 1/100 sec. My S414 works fine when I take pictures of distant objects and under strong lighting though.

A number of other threads had seemed to indicate that the occasional AF problems with the s404 had been fixed in the s414 by a change in the firmware. However, your post seems to indicate that perhaps the problem still exists.

I just took a few more indoor shots today and find something strange: the focus of still objects seems to be better than that of human faces. I was using auto exposure, flash, spot metering, daylight white balance, and ISO 200. The shutter speed was about 1/60 to 1/90 sec. Any ideas?

I wonder if using ISO 100 setting would help?
Perhaps you may have a faulty camera or have some camera shake. I
have had my 414 for almost 3 weeks and have had no problems with
focusing. It will run circles around my Fuji 602 in low light.
