Why 100-400 rating is 3.6 only???

It does look blurry. But I don't know how to gauge such an enlarged full size crop.

I bought this lens recently, and did as much reading as possible
beforehand. I saw example images that convinced me the lens could
certainly do the job - the images I get are plenty sharp. I bought
it because I will eventually do some trips that will get me close
to wildlife, and I want to limit the number of items I carry.
If you want pictures of birds, especially small birds, it looks
like anything smaller than the 500mm will be less than adequate.
People talk about using 400mm + 1.4 + 2.0 extenders! If you are
after small birds, this lens might not do it.
I take Michael Reichmann's reviews to heart. The 100-400 is
supposed to be sharper than the 70-200 with an extender.
It sure would be nice if Canon would upgrade this with the ring
zoom - the push-pull takes some getting used to.

While I really want to get the 100-400 IS, I'm a bit concerned
about Photodo's rating of 3.6 on this expensive lens.

Up to 200mm, it seems my 70-200/4 will win hands down. Even with a
1.4, it probably won't be worse than 100-400 @ 280mm.

Why is this lens rated like a 28-135 IS consumer grade?

Thanks Hugo,

It seems 400mm is not so good, esp with IS on. The images are only fine when tripod mounted.

In this case, I'll keep my 70-200/4 and add a 1.4TC to give me a decent 300mm in a decent weight.

Well, that's good news and bad news... Good news is I can save a lot of money. Bad news is I can't get 400mm unless I mount the 2X. Results are barely acceptable plus no AF....

The 100-400L is the best money buy right now, though a bit not satisfying at the 400mm end. However, in two months we will have one more choice. Hope the new Sigma will be better than the Canon and Nikon and at lower price. They do have good experience with the 50-500.

I cannot use Nikon lens on Canon w/o some special mount.

Yes, Sigma OS.... However I don't like the weight, it's 300g more than 100-400. Very heavy I think.... but might create a price drop on 100-400?

I don't shoot airshows, but for birds in flight focus is indeed important, and this is where the 100-400 falls down for me. It doesn't focus nearly as well as my 70-200 f4 so I'm probably going to replace it (or supplement it) with a 300/f4 IS and 1.4tc. I don't find the zoom of much use anyway normally shooting at 400. Maybe the planes at an airshow are far enough away to avoid this problem, I don't know.

Since we are on the subject of the 100-400L again, how about for
airshow photography?

Would people recommend the 100-400L or the 300/f4 IS? My
understanding is that AF isn't much use at an airshow (everything
is at infinity), so are extenders a problem?

Thanks,

-Dan

Hi Hugo,
Yes I did buy it. I am waiting for it to arrive (hopefully early next week).
I can't wait!

Well, I suggest you keep your 70-200/4 handy for anything less than 300mm.

For me, I use lens for landscape photography. Therefore AF speed is not that important. I might get 400mm/5.6 to compliment my 70-200/4 since I won't be handhelding it anyway.

The 70-200/4 is such a awesome lens that I don't want to part with it :)

Here is an example of the 100-400L wide open (F5.6) at 400mm. Anything BUT blurry or lacking in sharpness. Most of these results are pure user error or bad copies of the lens and NOT the lens in general at all.....

... are easy, and the 1D will easily follow focus with that lens.
