I always buy consumer goods and get aggravated. It just works that way for me. Some times it is my expectations being led astray, and other times not.
My first 9 cd players all went back. High end or low end, I could find fault with all. Most skipped by the way.
Cassette decks in the car, they had wow and flutter. I finally got one I could stand and the transmission mounts needed changing because the vibrations caused flutter!
Two Sony XBR televisions and 14 months of on phone arguing with Sony. They even delivered a new 250 lb TV to a place 70 miles away from my home twice! The shipper was clueless due to a Sony person getting things fouled up. And this was the replacement TV for the one I argued over for 14 months!
Three Sony 707s and I'm still not happy with Sony's design compromises. My problem not theirs , except for certain other QC issues.
So I'm into Canon 10D. Liking it a lot and looking for areas it can excel in and areas to steer clear of.
Over all, it seems a competent camera. Speedy and responsive in lighted situations, and quite good in low light to a point. I find AWB needs to be over ridden inside. I also like the variable contrast/saturation/sharpness parameters. Who wouldn't.
The AF test for me is wether a camera can shift focus quickly enough when following a child on a swing coming at you. The 10D and my few lenses (15-30 Sigma, 50mm 1.4, 100mm 2.8 macro) try, but only get the job done in 30% of the shots. Now to try a 1D................
See, now I am worrying about the camera because it is new and some folks here raise issues with it that perhaps should be addressed. So far for me the AF seems fine 90 % of the time. It is sometimes confused in low light and tries valiantly. This is much better than on my E-20 which confirms OK focus when no such thing has occurred.
I can and will look for problems in the camera as is custom here. It also makes sense to really check it out to see if it delivers what is advertised.
Put it to the tests and see if Canon QC has done their job, before the warrantee runs out.
I will do night exposures soon, as I got a new tripod. I like night exposures. I hope not to have any of those artificial stars in the photos. Wish me luck
