After my third 10D, I have definately come to the conclusion that until Canon sort out the serious focus problems.....you should NOT buy this camera. You have been warned!! My third 10D, each as bad as the other, has been sent back. Stick with your D60 or 1D. I expect much higher quality control from Canon, and right now with their Digital line, it's VERY hit and miss.

Mike, I'm sorry to hear about the hassles you've had trying to get a 10D that focuses accurately.

It's a bit OT, but could you please comment on the "feel" of the 10D compared to your 1D, particularly the relative AF speed and shutter response time, especially in low light? (Or just comment on your 1D, if you don't mind).

What you're said has got me wondering about the 10D I'm waiting for, and thinking I should pony up the extra cash for a 1D.

Thanks for any info.

Canon D30 / EOS3 and various lenses, all on loan from E* y.

sorry to hear of your problems, but no reason to make blanket statements. Recently, somebody posted a poll asking who did NOT have a problem with their 10D, and it filled up very quickly.

Yes....that's great.....but i'm from the school of thought that buying a camera (especially a pro or semi/pro camera), should not be a gamble. We are talking Canon after all, and not some no name brand.

Sorry to hear that mate. My 10D is working to spec so far. Do you have any other threads on this forum detailing your sepcific problem, or would you like to elaborate a bit more here?

I've recently posted an article investigating the focus issues with the 10D ( http://goinside.com/03/4/10dt.html ). Couldn't find any problems, but I did conclude that there's every likelihood of a few bad apples coming from Canon's mass production line, brand name or not. However, three in a row...I'd have won the lottery on those odds!

Best,
gL

I feel the need to make buyers aware, so that they are clear that the 10D purchase they are about to make is indeed a gamble. I am happy for users of 10D's that actually work correctly. Quality control seems to have gone by the wayside. Making a purchase, shouldn't involve keeping your fingers crossed, or saying a prayer.

You thought these images were "soft":

I think it's your eye sight. These look great.

You can choose to ignore my advice, but I'm NOT the only one that's noticed a problem! Wait for Canon to address the focus issues, or at least offer a firmware upgrade.

You think those pictures are soft? Yes or no?

My 10D is serving me well.

I changed my lenses. With my 24-85 lens images were VERY soft out of camera almost looking unfocused. I applied quite a bit of USM to make them look good. Then I tried a 75-300IS and even at 300mm my pics were sharp ( i set my paramaters to COntrast +1, Sharpness +2 and Saturation +1) - Now I was getting super sharp shots. I then tried a 28-135IS and it was better than the 24-85 but still a little soft. Nothing PS couldnt fix. below is a shot from my 100-400LIS - This has been resized and minor USM appied (0.3, 150, 0) - other than that it is straight from the camera. If this was taken with my old 24-85 it would of been almost blurry. I have found that the 10D is sensitive to certain lenses.

My 10D front focused severely with a tokina 28-80 atx and a sigma 28-70 ex, however, it was dead on with my tokina 100mm macro. Anyhow, I went to my local camera store and tried out the 35mm f/2 and the 70-200mm f/4 L and the both were accurate too. Also, I just picked up a used 28-70mm L from KEH and it too focuses fine. To make a long story short, despite the fact that the AF is located in the body, which lenses you use seems to have an impact.

I always buy consumer goods and get aggravated. It just works that way for me. Some times it is my expectations being led astray, and other times not.

My first 9 cd players all went back. High end or low end, I could find fault with all. Most skipped by the way.

Cassette decks in the car, they had wow and flutter. I finally got one I could stand and the transmission mounts needed changing because the vibrations caused flutter!

Two Sony XBR televisions and 14 months of on phone arguing with Sony. They even delivered a new 250 lb TV to a place 70 miles away from my home twice! The shipper was clueless due to a Sony person getting things fouled up. And this was the replacement TV for the one I argued over for 14 months!

Three Sony 707s and I'm still not happy with Sony's design compromises. My problem not theirs , except for certain other QC issues.

So I'm into Canon 10D. Liking it a lot and looking for areas it can excel in and areas to steer clear of.

Over all, it seems a competent camera. Speedy and responsive in lighted situations, and quite good in low light to a point. I find AWB needs to be over ridden inside. I also like the variable contrast/saturation/sharpness parameters. Who wouldn't.

The AF test for me is wether a camera can shift focus quickly enough when following a child on a swing coming at you. The 10D and my few lenses (15-30 Sigma, 50mm 1.4, 100mm 2.8 macro) try, but only get the job done in 30% of the shots. Now to try a 1D................

See, now I am worrying about the camera because it is new and some folks here raise issues with it that perhaps should be addressed. So far for me the AF seems fine 90 % of the time. It is sometimes confused in low light and tries valiantly. This is much better than on my E-20 which confirms OK focus when no such thing has occurred.

I can and will look for problems in the camera as is custom here. It also makes sense to really check it out to see if it delivers what is advertised.

Put it to the tests and see if Canon QC has done their job, before the warrantee runs out.

I will do night exposures soon, as I got a new tripod. I like night exposures. I hope not to have any of those artificial stars in the photos. Wish me luck
