Hi,

Anyone using a 360 One VR with a D60? I am thinking of getting one, but have a few questions that maybe you can help with:

1) after cropping, what is the actual pixel dimension of the panorama when taken with a d60?

2) how difficult is it to get out of the picture? Using a tall monopod seems easy, but how do you level the camera if you can't see any bubble levels on the base?

3) The reviews say there is a blind spot you can hide in right under the camera, but it seems this should change depending on the lens used. Any direct experiences, especially with 50mm and 35mm and 24mm?

4) Finally are you happy with the quality? I have a Manfrotto pano head for taking panos intended for print (much higher pixel resolution) but for quick, web only (or small print) stuff will this do the job?

5) Any problems with a standard step-up ring, e.g. 52mm to 67mm?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, Howard

Are you happy with Manfrotto pano head? Have you used it to take pictures in two or more rows -- can it be done without any addition such as Kaidan Spherical Camera arm?

Hi Mart,

I am very happy with the Manfrotto pano head. I bought the deluxe version (can't recall the model number right now 3418, maybe) because the normal one was out of stock. This one has thumbscrew controls for both axis which makes minor adjustments a breeze. I have not tried 2 or more row panos. But I don't see how I could do it without more hardware since the range of the tripod from lowest to highest is no more than 4 feet. That might buy me a little veritcal FOV, but not much.

The pano head is built like a tank and weighs a lot too.

I am fascinated with this Kaidan 360 but can't find anyone with one. There was a review recently on creativepro.com so maybe I can wite the author of the review.

Saludos,
Howard

Bogen makes a bubble level that straps onto the center post on a tripod, and could be used on a monopod, as well. You could put it at whatever height you find comfortable. Unless your monopod is bent, the bubble level would work.

They have them at B&H, and also at Porters. They call it the Bogen autopole Spirit Level, and Porter's part number is 15-0370. I paid $8 at B&H. Porter wants $9.25. Do a search on the name or partnumber at:

I kept it strapped to the center post of my Gitzo tripod for years untill a 100 degree sun dehydrated the spirit out of it in my trunk :-(

Steves Digicams has a review

I bought it a few months ago to use on sites I build for realtors etc. Am just now getting around to using it and spoke to Kaidan today to see if a G2 attachment was in the works as I wasn't all that happy with the 990 coolpix combo. The results were OK but was hoping for better. Was very happy to hear that they are releasing their new SLR attachment which will allow you to use D60 etc which I have. I don't have any great samples to post yet and probably won't do anything with the gizmo till the new attachment for the D60 is avail which they say is 3 weeks away. Check out Steve's review for samples etc, it's pretty positive and the new attachment will probably make it a viable tool (always hoping).

When I get the SLR attachment I'll try to remember to post some...you might want to remind me this time next month if you are still shopping...

On the kaidan site they have a photo of the new setup on the home page

good luck!!

Thanks Phelps,

I had visited Steves and checked out the review. That's what led to the questions. There is another review (positive) at http://www.creativepro.com/story/review/18305.html and it really didn't answer my questions either.

Since you have one and did use it a bit with the CP990, can you tell me the native resolution of the CP 990 (1600x1200 maybe?) and then what resolution the "unwarped" pano was right from the software? This is what concerns me the most. How much raw data will I really get from the shot with a d60? Starting with a 3072x2048 frame, I hope you don't lose more than 20% or so, but looking at those examples it seems you might lose up to 50% of the pixels.

I was figuring on using a simple 52mm to 67mm step up ring and a ball-mount tripod head (for vertical orientation) to attach the puppy to the d60.

Thanks for the comments. And I will remind you in a month or so.

Hi Phelps,

Did you ever get the SLR adapter attachment for the VR One and shoot some d60 photos?

I would really be interested in seeing how it performed.

Thanks.
