Question concerning WCON lens...

Ok, so our cams have a zoom range of 38mm on the wide angle, out to 190mm on the zoom side (optical). Right? Ok, so the WCON lens from Olympus is a .8 wide angle lense. So to figure the relative mm with the WCON attached you would go 38 x .8 = 30.4mm Right? I know this is remedial math but bear with me.

So even with the use of the WCON you are only getting a 30mm wide angle lens if I understand this. My question is two part.... is this wide enough to make a noticeable difference? And is there any other high quality lens that offer a wider angle?

Thanks!

If you wait a while, I am trying to find a shop near me who has the 58-62 step ring. So far no luck, but this weekend I am determined to find it. I've got a couple more places that I want to check out. When I get it I can provide you with all the samples that you want. I am hoping that it will work as well with the 717 as it does with my E-10. With the E-10 you can just leave it on and still use your entire zoom range. That way you aren't always having to take the lens on and off the camera depending on the shot you want to take.

Thanks Dwight, I'd appreciate it. I was dumb and ordered my step ring from B&H. There was nothing else I needed at the time. It was like 10.00 and shipping was 5.00!! I didnt really pay attention to that untill this teenie tiny package arrived and I had paid 50% of the cost to have it shipped. Doh!!

LOL That's why I haven't ordered one from B&H yet. I don't need anything else right now, so I don't want to spend that much just for the step ring. I just called Helix camera in Chicago and they do have the step ring. Looks like I get to take a little drive to Chicago today.

Here's one sample using the WCON. For this one I took the shot with the WCON on the camera, then took it off and took the same shot again. Normally I would use PS and adjust the skew on these but I figured I'd leave them as they were. I can do another couple shots today if you'd like. May be a little more precise if I put the camera on a tripod and took them. That way you have the camera taking pictures at the exact same spot. Let me know if you want that done.

You want WIDE.. here's wide.. Raynox FE180pro. .24x
full wide without..

full wide with fe180pro

Of course you have to be careful about your sides and forground because of the distortion. This was taken at full wide with my fe180pro.

Obviously you can zoom in some and get less distortion.

Doesn't seem to add that much. I mean, I can see how with the WCON,
you're getting a wider image, it just doesn't appear that dramatic!

The two photos look almost identical.

I disagree. You have a whole extra building + on either side in the back. On the fountain, you have at least an extra few feet on either side in the picture. If you're doing closer shots it may not be of much use to you. If you're doing landscape/scenic shots, it will make a world of difference.

I'm with you on this one. It does add quite a bit in my opinion. It works really well for scenic shots, and that's what I use it for 99% of the time. It also helps if you just don't have any room to back up to get more in the frame. I've used it in that situation quite a few times.

Thanks for the samples Dwight. I think I am gonna put the hundred dollars I would spend on this lens into my DSLR fund instead. I just dont see the benefit. I mean it seems like only a few more degrees of view are added with the WCON. I am looking for something more extreme I think.

As an owner, I've had great results and excellent clarity without having to worry about the "warped" look. It was money well spent in my opinion.
