I will be publishing my website soon and need FTP software to upload. I looked have downloaded CuteFTP and am looking at SmartFTP. Can someone recommend a good FTP program. Thank You!

I've been using SmartFTP for a couple of years and it's never failed me. My needs are not those of a professional web designer but I find that it's simple drag and drop to the website is foolproof. I'm sure it'll do more than I need.

Another thing, it's free! I've seen this statement annoy some posters here but if I can get the features I want for free I'll go that route every time.

Thank You! I will give them a try this weekend. I like free also, gives me $$ for photo equipment.

Don't forget that Internet Explorer does bidirectional FTP. You can open up an FTP site in your web browser and then drag and drop to upload images. When you connect to your ftp site, there is a menu item under the File Menu that lets you log in. Its nothing complex, but it does work.

If you're going to use a web page design program such as frontpage, golive, homesite, etc. most of them have FTP built in -- and they are better than separate FTP program as they automatically upload only the new and changed pages.

Hi Norm,

Photo- and image-management tools also often provide simple FTP tools. I doubt a free one would, however.

That's another excellent reason not to use Microsoft products like frontpage. Neither golive nor homesite require any special so-called "extensions" be supported by your web page service provider yet both still allow intelligent (new & changed only) file uploads. I use golive. Many other softwares would also work.

As always someone needs to contiribute an open source software and I guess that I'll take the responsibility this time:

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

I used to use SmartFTP but it got some strange bugs and hang-ups from time to time (propably because of the system, installed programs etc. but still easiest to fix by xhanging program...). I was looking for something and bumped in to FileZilla. FileZilla has worked really well for me. Its a worth of try, since many minor details are a metter of tasete.

I don't want to knock the FREE programs as many are in fact quite good - but it's often the case that they rarely do as well as a specialist prog. I've used WS_FTP for a LONG time and never had any cause for complaint at all - a very good program. Certainly in this area , as most work differently , I'd say try a few and go for the one YOU feel happy with..there ARE differences..and in this area I think it's got to be one that you can work easily and efficiently - it's generally a one-off acquisition .. so get it right and forget it thereafter. TRY a few...they ARE different

WSFTP, LEECH, CuteFTP all work well.
Use a ftp program so you have total control over your file up and down loads.

As a result of your posting I tried FileZilla. I think it is better than ws_ftp and CuteFTP (trial version). In my case, uploading to attbi, when I try to upload a lot of files (a web page picture album) with a minimum number of clicks, I get into error situations and FileZilla rides thru them the best. ws_ftp stops the upload and sort of tells you there is an error, CuteFTP got into a loop trying to relogon to the remote server.

I think I will be switching to golive. I spent the last week creating photo galleries using a frontpage template just to find out that it is not compatible with ATTBI. Should have went with Golive from the start. Live and learn
