..of course all these cameras will be downgraded a notch when
the new batch of cameras come out.. but what can I say,
c'est la vie( !)- I mean, sooner or later you gotta take the dive
and buy something, no? For me the S70 was and is the answer
to my present photographic needs. Who knows what holds for
us in the future though. In a couple of years we'll probably be looking
at this list saying " oh yeah, remember that camera? " -or- "I can't
believe Phil give this camera a Recommended rating!." LOL. I tell
you, there's still a lot of room for improvement in the digital photography
world and I know my most recent purchase isn't gonna be my last
either- but I bet you the camera companies don't know this either

Well, Phil has finally done something that I can't agree with.
I guess there is a first time for everything;> )

Trying to take something fairly complex, like his rather in depth reviews, and label them with a "one Size fits all".

I must admit that I am biased but I strongly disagree with his rating of the CD1000 as average.

This is a camera in which he rates the image right with the Nikon 950 (the "benchmark 2 mP camera").
This camera has so much technology.

10X. It can take pictures that the 950 can't even TAKE. Let's do a comparison of THOSE!
Image Stabilization - the best in the biz
CD-R - I mean this is technology. Leading edge stuff.
and then calls the 950 "Highly Recommended" and the Cd1000 "average"?
Huh? What's wrong with this picture?

The Cd1000 is many different things to many different folks, but "average" is not the word to be used here.
I freely admit that the 1000 is a love it or hate it design.

I would have been better able to understand a "disappointing" rating rather than "average, with an explanation of what was disappointing.

But I think that is what happens when you strive to do the one size fits all. You take the outstanding features of the 1000 and you "average" them with the CONs of the camera and it comes out "average" .
Even if the CONS don't bother you individually.
ALL cameras heve CONs.
Don't they? Some, on the recommended and above are very serious CONs.

The CD1000 is a lot of things, some good, some not so good, but it most certainly cannot be considered an "average" 2MP camera.

I suspect that the "one size fits all" will fail time and again to portray the camera.

Ulysses,

Interesting. If i am remember correctly the rating for the Sony DSC-D700
last week was "Good". So what changed his mind?

BTW: If the DSC-D700 gets an "recommanded" the DSC-D770 is good for a
"highly recommanded", isn't it ? :)

Best regards,

Andreas

I think the rating systems is way too simple. Each camera is built with some unique strength to address the specific set of market requirements. It would make more sense ( like Consumer Report ) to compare the similar cameras and give ratings between them. Simply saying that "Jeep GC is recommended" while "Camry is above average" doesn't serve any useful purpose.

I would say Canon IXUS is very highly recommened for those who need the small camera. SONY CD-1000 is also very highly recommended for those who look for 10x zoom with image stabilizer. Oly 2100UZ is highly recommened for Andreas while it's below average for Curt A ;-) I can go on and on.

Actually, it's more like 'six categories fit all' of Phil's necessary range of review opinions. It's rather like in school here in the U.S. getting grades of A, B, C, D, or F.

I'm glad that he went back and reevaluated his reviews. Some folks are ecstatic with the way their cameras have been upgraded with his final subjective recommendation. Others are sorely disappointed with Phil when his review doesn't agree with their own. Hey, I'm no different, other than my camera of choice received a "Highly Recommended". So I'm not complaining. :)

Here is the way I see it. Phil's site is intended for one primary purpose. That purpose is reviews. We come to get reviews of the features of a camera's body, its recording ability, its playback, its LCD, the internal functions of its firmware, and finally to get Phil's knowledgeable conclusion on how the camera weighs in the light of other currently available cameras.

While his needs may not be the needs of "everyman", we can be sure as to the camera's features and usability because of his depth of experience. It's up to the individual as to whether or not the pros and cons fit the user's individual profile. One can look at a con and say, "Oh well, I need it to work like that." Another person may say that one of the listed pros may not be suitable for their circumstance. So then no matter the general conclusion that Phil gives, we each weigh the conclusion against our own judgement.

We do that sort of thing every day in life anyway. Movie reviews, restaurant reviews, car reviews, Coke and Pepsi taste tests, etc. The conclusion and recommendation page serve a purpose. But they are not the sole reason we come here, nor are they the final word for any overall decision we might make. They are a sort of bonus opinion from an experienced photographer.

I agree that what I find important in a camera is not what everybody else will find important. It is also had to say what audience will be reading this. Its some times hard to see which nich of buyers will buy a particular camera.

in the absence of a far more complex rating system, what Phil is using will have to work.
While his needs may not be the needs of "everyman", we can be sure as to

I agree with you for almost all that you said.

My point is that the evaluations or ratings should be in table form with multiple columns rather than a single number. Car reviews, home appliance reviews etc all come with tables. The more expensive they are, the bigger the tables are. Movie reviews are OK to be a single number because it's subjective anyway and you only pay $10. The single number rating system is like saying "Mary is highly recommneded". For what ? As a wife ? As a secretary ? As a mom ? As a manager ?
While his needs may not be the needs of "everyman", we can be sure as to
the camera's features and usability because of his depth of experience.
It's up to the individual as to whether or not the pros and cons fit the
user's individual profile. One can look at a con and say, "Oh well, I
need it to work like that." Another person may say that one of the
listed pros may not be suitable for their circumstance. So then no
matter the general conclusion that Phil gives, we each weigh the
conclusion against our own judgement.

We do that sort of thing every day in life anyway. Movie reviews,
restaurant reviews, car reviews, Coke and Pepsi taste tests, etc. The
conclusion and recommendation page serve a purpose. But they are not the
sole reason we come here, nor are they the final word for any overall
decision we might make. They are a sort of bonus opinion from an
experienced photographer.

Useful or not
Phil has recently revamped his ratings system for the camera reviews.
He's divided up his opinions into six distinct categories:

I would say Canon IXUS is very highly recommened for those who need the
small camera. SONY CD-1000 is also very highly recommended for those who
look for 10x zoom with image stabilizer. Oly 2100UZ is highly recommened
for Andreas while it's below average for Curt A ;-) I can go on and on.
DOH! And you've just negated your own argument...

PEOPLE MUST READ THE REVIEWS. I can't say that enough, I think I'll scrap the conclusions page altogether if it's going to create this much fuss!

Bahahahahah!!!©

I know a "Mary". I wouldn't hire her for anything, and I wouldn't marry her. So I guess she isn't 'highly recommended' for me!!

LOL!

Phil - I think what you've done is outstanding and was very very helpfull in making my purchasing desicion. (I just ordered it yesterday!). Going back and re-rating each camera is an excellent idea and makes complete sense.

I would continue with what you are doing and not change a thing. I like your objectivness and the conclusion is where I usually jump too first for a new review. I particularly like when you bring in comparable cameras and do side by side comparisons of image quality in the review. Although the other sites are very good, you just don't get a real objective look, side by side comparison and opinion like you do here. I find that very valuable.

I'm sure you know when you run a site like this: you just can't make everyone happy.
