10D Vacation Disaster

All I could think when I read this is ooooouuuuch!

You have my deepest sympathies....
Well I just returned back from a cruise into the Caribbean using my
EOS-10D, 28-70 f28L, 70-200 f2.8L, and Sigma 15-30.

I was taking some pictures in Bridgetown, Barbados near the cruise
pier. A Barbados security guard came up to me and said ” Since
9-11, people are forbidden to take pictures of the pier.” So I
kindly placed my EOS-10D with my attached 28-70 f2.8L into my
Tamrac Expedition 5 photo backpack. I guess I didn’t zipper it
very well because when I slung it over to my back the 10D, 28-70
f2.8L along with my 70-200 f2.8L launched out of the top of the
backpack flying like 10 feet into the air landing in the middle of
the street next to me. My Sigma 15-30 managed to stay in the pack
and was spared. I heard a big “AWWW!!” coming from all the
tourists passing by that just witnessed this.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. My 10D that I was the first to get
from a local camera shop in Connecticut last week was just broken
apart here on my vacation in Barbados. I collected what was left,
and surveyed the damage.....The 10D LCD was cracked and doesn’t
work, the “pop up” built in flash hinge is broken and doesn’t pop
up or fire. The flash hot shoe rails are bent and I can’t mount my
550EX on it anymore. The ring on the lens mount is bent in an
upward position. The reflex mirror is scratched. Major, deep
sharp burred scratches were all over the top and back on the 10D.
The eyecup is shredded. The camera still turns on but overexposes
all its shots and keeps getting a”ERROR 99” on the LCD, and shuts
off after a few shots.

The 28-70L f2.8 was totally destroyed. The main lens element in
front was cracked and the barrel totally broke in half (into 2
pieces) with its AF USM wires hanging out. The 70-200 f2.8 front
lens element cracked along with the B&W UV Haze filter attached on
the front. Everything is just scrap metal now. It was a bad
feeling carrying my photo backpack home with a pile of useless junk
in it which used to be my camera setup.

What a mess!!! I learned the hard way. I had no insurance on it,
nothing, zero. Well now I am going to get insurance. And guess
what, today my first day back here at home in Connecticut, I
stopped back to my local camera shop where I bought my first 10D
and bought another one. I also picked up a new 28-70mm f2.8L and a
70-200mm f2.8L IS..I upgraded to the IS to treat myself through
this pain…THIS WHOLE EXPIRENCE HIT ME HARD IN THE WALLET - OUCH!

Be careful, the 10D is built better than the D60, but you can still
destroy it..I found it out unfortunately…UGH!

Later I will post some beautiful shots I took with my 10D before it
met the grim reaper.

At least I have my new one sitting here next to me ready to play.

All the best

I'm sure it is repairable from the description. New lensmount, mirror, LCD panel, Eye piece, rear/top covers, flash and probably a few other items here and there. Not an inexpensive repair to be sure but likely cheaper than a new camera.
They are really good about stuff like this... and believe it or not
most manufacturers are.

Tell the story like you told us!!!

;-) actually I am really sorry to hear what happened I know how it feels!

Yes, but it was a Visa debit card that comes out of my checking acct.. I called the bank, and they do not offer buyer protection like AMEX.

Gary
I am very sorry for you. It must have been hard to see all these
nice things like this.
I am asking if you paid your purchase with a credit card, because
some of them have a 3 months disaster warranty included at no
additional charges.
It would be nice for you if you have this opportunity
Good luck

I just called my homeowners ins co. They are closed for the night.. I'll try tommrow..

Sorry to hear about what happened...quite painful to read...

Just before packing my 10D and gear for Yosemite last week, I opened what State Farm calls a "Personal Article Policy". My premium is $50/year for the first $2000.00 of coverage and 46 cents for every additional $100.00. Being an "all-peril" policy, it covers just about anything that could happen to my gear anywhere, short of intentional sabotage, with only a $50.00 deductible. My regular homeowner policy (also w/State Farm) would only cover $250.00 for personal items.

Hope that helps...

Some insurance policy won't cover your gear outside the US or in third world countries, so even if you had insurance, sometimes it won't even do any good. So make sure you know the geographical limitation of your policy.

Best,

Sonny

What a bummer. I've had experienced 'drop a camera accidently' feeling BUT to drop all those lens must be the next level of enlightment. At least Nelson Muntz wasn't in the crowd.

Now let's have those pictures!!! I want close-ups... macros... studio lighting... re-enactment w/ high speed flash on shattering (with playmates if possible)....

Sorry to hear about your misfotune.

I don't suppose you bought your camera with an Amex card. The card has a ninety day coverage for damage or theft. They also double your warranty. They also guarantee your ability to return items in the first 90 days and will compensate for finding a lower advertised price within 60 days of purchase.

You should also check your homeowner's policy. I know that most State Farm policyholders would be covered (to certain limits, by policy and state), as long as they're not professional photographers. If you exceed the limit, SF often waives your deductible. Rental policies also offer some protection. In some cases, I believe an insurance deductible would be tax-deductible; though that may only apply to real (not personal) property.

I had fears about this very thing happening. As long as you are replacing the gear, consider replacing the bag. I love mine for the security of not having things fly out of it. Sorry to hear about your experience. Just reading it made me feel ill.

stand to buy the kit all over again!

I'm looking at buying a body only at present, let alone lenses.... (looking)

I do recognize the pain though, of even scratching something you have looked after.. or tried to.

condolences!

Gary
Sounds like an insurance job to me.

LOL... ...did you try "resetting" the camera?... ...the masses want to believe it fixes problems known and unkwown... :-)

Thank you for sharing your sad & expensive experience. Maybe some people are now a bit more careful. I would also like to confirm that good insurance coverage is important.

But don't forget to review your insurance coverage, please. Maybe, you're also better off with a shoulder bag? Backpacks are nice to transport photo gear from A to B, but not really ment to be used inbetween. I have both a backback as well as a large shoulder bag (large not for more photo gear, but for a raincoat, maps, mobile, water etc.).
