Tripods & Heads

Does anyone have opinions on the Kirk Ball heads?

Hi Eric ,
I just received the Kirk BH-1 two weeks ago ,and so far I love it.
It is heavey tho . I've also had the 50-500 for 3 wks. I use these
with my 3221 Bogen aluminum tri-pod ( $145 or so ). In my not
very expert opinion , this seems to me to be the minimum set-up
for the 5o-500 , not only because of weight , but also because of
it's length when extended . I tried the next lighter Bogen tri-pod ,
and there was too much shake. I think the Acro-tech or BH-3 , and
gitzo 1228 would be fine for your 70-200 , I believe you need a bigger
tri-pod and either the Bh-1 or Arca Swiss for the Sigma. A Kirk plate
for the 50-500- $58 and similar for the 70- 200 . total cost with these ,
and above set-up - $600. As for myself , I'm soon going to go with the

Gitso 1325 , as it's even sturdier , and 2 Lbs. lighter , tho much more expensive.

Ray-

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions so thoroughly. I
haven't gotten one of the big lenses yet--biggest I have is 28-200.
However, I don't want "creep" when I have a shot setup. Is there a
way to tighten down the Acretech to avoid this? Even a little bit
would be too much when doing macro stuff.

Sorry for not responding earlier. I am just now catching up on
posts and email.

You're welcome, Janice.

I'd have to give you a definite "maybe" on adjusting the Acratech to eliminate the creep. In my case, it's very small, maybe a small fraction of a degree, and it hasn't bothered me enough to worry much about it. It's hardly noticeable with the camera/lens pointing near horizontal, but becomes more pronounced the further downward you tilt the lens. And it's maybe a little worse with my longer/ heavier lens. The Acratech has a small upper adjustment knob which may be used to tune the tension when the clamp is not secure enough; it's intended to be used rarely, and in fact, the knob is too small to get much hand leverage on it. So I haven't played with it much, and don't really know if it will solve the problem or not. Maybe some other Acratech users have an opinion; I've heard mostly positive comments about the product on this forum.

Could be that I have a slightly inferior sample. I still think your idea of testing the alternatives in person is wise. I'd suggest taking your 28-200 lens along for the test, even if that's not the one you would use for your flower macros.

Does anybody know of a readily-available vise-clamp that I can mount on a heavy tripod, i.e. its bottom has the 3/8-16 hole for the tripod screw?

Thanks again, Ray. I will research and see if I can find a shop that has them both in stock.

The g1228 is $487 @ adorama - is there like some super secret online tripod vendor I should know about? :)
