New MicroDrives with QV-3000

There should be something like this - an "unknown" "hidden" key press
combination...

There is one more key press combination:

Keep "MENU" and "DISP" pressed while switching the camera on (REC or PLAY).

You will get some informations as results of internal tests.

Don't ask me for the meanings - I don't know them.

Eckhard,

Fascinating! I can't wait to see what several here make of this. :-)

Thanks for discovering this!

Like Vince, says Butch, you don't need to update the firmware if you have just recently bought the QV3000EX, because it will come with V1.002 installed.

I bought in March 00 when the firmware was 1.000. So I upgraded because I likes to do that kinda stuff :).

IMHO I'm sure anyone else who has not upgraded won't really need to, because, as someone else pointed out on another thread, the version number of the firmware has not changed to 1.1 indicating major change, just to 1.002 which indicates only minor bug fixes were made.

Anyway that's my 0.02 Swiss Francs

Has anybody used the new 512meg or 1gig MicroDrives with the
Casio-QV3000? I am wondering if they truly are compatable and if the
time it takes to write to the disk is different than the 340meg drive...

especially as the drive fills up. I was all set to buy the casio3000 and then all this talk about firmware and I thought geeeze I just want to make my life simpler by getting a digital camera, not more complicated. So far as I have read some of the replys I did not yet see whether the new ibm micro drives are compatible... that is without complicated updating of the software. In a nut shell, are the new micro drives compatible or not?
It should be since it lists as compatible. If you went to buy the
camera today, you should get the latest 1.002 or later firmware anyways
so it's not a worry and not complicated since it's just like copying a
file..

OK I get (with a camera bought in March 2000 upgraded to V1.002)

TEST MODE (IRDA OK)
PROG 00.05.16.15.03
GMENU 99.12.27.18.12
LOADER 0X00000008
MOTOR 0X00000322
POWER 0X22

CCD1 YES STROBE YES
CCD2 YES KIZU YES
CCD3 YES ZOOM YES
FOCUS YES

I'm happy to see all those yeses. PROG & GMENU are obviously dates/times in int'l mode yy.mm.dd.hh.mm. As to what the hexes mean ...

That's Meister Eckhard for yet another revelation about my favourite toy!

Hi Maurice,

Well I just checked again and have the exact same read out verbatim. So I'm voting that this is some kind of hardware read out, since my 3rd camera purchased within the month says the same as yours purchased in march.

I am most delighted to know I have KIZU! Aren't you? :-)

Me too.

That's exactly the same I got.

It would be interesting to get different infos of someone who got the 1.000 or 1.001 version of the firmware.
I'm happy to see all those yeses. PROG & GMENU are obviously dates/times
in int'l mode yy.mm.dd.hh.mm.
Seems to be plausible.

Mine too! I 'googled' Kizu and came up with a District in Kansai Science City
called Seika - Nishi Kizu District that contains among others:

Canon Ecology R & D Center
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.,Ltd. Central Research Laboratory
NTT Research And Development Center

So I was cooking up all sorts of theories to do with development, or maybe even a person's name, like 'foo was here'.

Now I've got 'Kizu Yes', you mean someone's violated my Casio?!?!?!?! I'm gonna have a word to that MD!!

Looking at what's not mentioned in the test and what's on the camera, there's the Ir Tran-P port ...

I did knock it off my desk once, and I had to sort of press the 2 halves back togther, fortunately it was not on and did not have the MD in.

Wonder if that rates as 'injury'
You just spoil all my fun! :-)

I don't know if I should be delighted to have KIZU.

A japanese speaking person told me it means something like

GMENU UPDATE? that would be interesting .. how about any BIN file updates?
Searching on that I find:
\ROM.BIN
\GMENU.BIN and of course
\QV3000EX.bin

So it looks as if everything is flashable, let's hope thety just support the thing worldwide.

I have an early QV-3000 (Early April 00) and my readings are the same other than:

PROG 00.02.24.17.40

So I guess this is the firmware date.

I assume "DiCaInfo" or any other "Exif Reader" reports version 1.000 of the firmware / "software exif tag" at the produced images - isn't it?

To complete it - does anybody have firmware 1.001 and can report the "PROG xxx" string?

Eckhard

Not lens cap. Maybe 'tongue in cheek yes/no'.

Interesting that the BIN file shows three sets of menus (with sub-menus) not ordinarily visible. Perhaps some keypress combination after starting with menu pressed for version #.

Lens cap on? Doh!

KIZU is everywhere!

Maurice:

No. That stuff is in plain text and plain text is only imbedded in code to present to the user at some time or another. Those menus are meant to be displayed.

Just got my QV3000 back from Casio repair (flash not working). My firmware is still v1.001(thought it may have upgraded to v1.002 since they claim to have replaced the main board (cold solder problem caused loose flash connection).

Anyway, with v1.001, the startup test readings are:
  • all the same except for PROG 00.03.24.15.38
Sorry if this is old news by now.

SteveK:

Interesting that Casio was able to diagnose the problem as a cold solder joint but they had to replace the mlb. No-one had a soldering iron?

The local computer store is constantly sending me little solder jobs even though they have a full time techie. She has a 3 year tech degree and 8 years field experience yet doesn't even know how to pug in a soldering iron.

By the way, thanks for the info on your fix. If my flash goes I might try and fix it myself.
