The Pentax *ist D

In the meantime I still haven't been able to bring myself to sell
my old Pentax 35mm SLRs. Every time I get ready to post them on
Ebay I pick them up and remember all the years of wonderful photos
I've taken with my Pentax ME and PZ-1 and then I remember that the
first photos I sold to a national magazine were from my Pentax
cameras
I'll play devil's advocate. Why even think of selling them? They've long since been paid for, they won't fetch any princely sums, they're reliable, and ... you may just change your mind. Digital is great but it still can't match a 35mm or MF camera for real B&W 400-1600EI photography. A year from now you may decide to burn a few rolls of HP5+ to get back to that classic look and feel. Your Pentaxes will still be there ready to go :)

You probably won't see much more than what is currently posted on the Pentax USA website under:

until June or July. Personally, as soon as my big fat tax return arrives I am going to get either a Canon 10D or a Fuji S2 Pro. I can't wait until July for Pentax to release a Digital SLR and then find out I was probably better off with either the Canon or the Fuji. Shame on Pentax for waiting so damn long to play catch up.

Has anyone heard anything about the Pentax *ist D since PMA?

I haven't found anything more recent on the Web and Pentax will not
respond to my e-mails.

I hope this camera lives up to the Pentax name, I'd hate to get rid
of all my Pentax lenses.

digital (with a Fuji Finepix 4900), I can't part with my Pentax
35mm gear ... yet.

Is there any news about the new DSLR?

The USB 1.1 is a little behind the times I think.
The representatives from Pentax have said that the *ist D will not
be released into stores until late June, early July. The
possible--do not quote me on this--will be $1400-1600 according to
initial reports (from the representatives). The camera is going to
be well worth the wait into the summer as Pentax makes great
products at great prices. With Pentax stepping up, and Nikon and
Canon already there, it's up to Minolta to board the ship of the
digital SLR market...we'll all wait and see what happens.
Unfortunately the Pentax reps couldn't give me specs on the camera,
which I and my customers are interested in collecting. Good luck to
all, and I just wanted to pass on the word. Thank you very much!

Pentax is late in the game. I an hoping that they are smart enough not to let the price ballon beyond a resonable point. Otherwise, very few will buy the camera. I think 1200 - 1400 US would be reasonable and would create a market for the camera. Above $2000 and I think many people, including myself would begin looking elsewhere for digital DSLR Photography.

Just in case Pentax reps read this forum - Price the *ist under $1000 and you will sell so many that you will not be able to keep up with the demand.
