Hi All,

I wish to buy a new digital camera. I have never owned a digital camera or SLR before. I am looking for something which will give me lots of options to excercise my creativity, taking photography as a serious hobby.

Reading reviews and seeing sample pictures, I found the S602Z quite attractive. But I am constantly being warned against Fujifilm, as opposed to brands like Canon or Olympus. Would it be safe to buy a Fuji S602Z inspite of the criticism? How does the S602Z compare with Olympus C730?
thanx,
Ananth

I do not know why people knock the Fuji cameras. They produce fine photos, are easy to operate and are well built. I chose my S602 over a Canon D60 DSLR and also the Fuji S2 also a DSLR and I do not regret my decision as the camera is everything I thought it would be plus some.

Warned away by who? Most of the magazine reviews I've read of the 602 have been generally good. If these are dealers or vendors, it just means they make more money off Canon or Olympus and are steering you away from Fuji not because of the camera quality, but because of the profit margin.

What criticism are you referring to here? I'm just curious, as most of the basic problems of that the 602 has are inherent to most digital cameras, and the amount of features you get outweight the few issues the 602 has. Also, many poeple do not realize that Fuji has made cameras for quite a long time. Thier Discovery series of point and shoot 35mm cameras were among the best out there and a spectacular value when compared against the Canon/Nikon/Oly/Pentax/Minolta offerings. Fuji has also made a very hightly acclaimed medium format point and shoot camera, in several versions, from a standard to wide angle zoom to a tele version. Their 645 auto cameras were one of a kind and are still being made today....also Fuji has a long history in panoramic cameras, the 6x9 and 6x17 format cameras.......so if someone says Fuji has no history in cameras, they either do not know what they are talking about or do not care........

I just jumped in and ordered mine about 30 minuntes ago and I am so excited. The dealers I talked all praised the S602. I have always heard this heirchy of camera makers (Canon, Nikon, Olyumpus, Pentax, Fuji) I am not sure how true this holds. Every single review I have read of the S602 praises it. Consumer Reports says that over fuji's reliability is up there with the best of them- even beating out Nikon. When I emailed Fuji about the camera being discontinued, they said that it is one of their best sellers and is not discontinued. However, when I went to Ritz Camera today, the guy told me that they would probably upgrade it- but the main upgrade would probably be the media type - killing SM for the xD format.
Hope this helps a bit

But of course, the dealer could give you proof of the problems, he was just trying to be helpful! :) One of the the things you tend to see in camera sotres, expecially chain stores like Ritz, Wolf or the big box stores like Curcuit City, is the many of thecamera sales people really do not know their stuff, especially if you venture outside the mainstream gear from Canon or Nikon. I was looking for a specific flash for my Pentax PZ-1p about a year ago and went to our local Wolf Camera Superstore. Their 35mm manager insisted to me that Pentax no longer made 35mm equipment, I'd never find what I needed and I should switch to a "real" brand like Nikon......that's just either complete ignorance on the manager's part or complete disregard for my intelligence....

I wouldn't be worried.......what difference will it make if the camera is discontinued? I use a 6900 and will keep it for as long as it continues to function. The camera meets all my needs and I have no need to switch. My guess would be a 602 will suit everyone's needs as it is a VERY capable camera. Unless you have quite specialized photographic interests, the 602 should be all the camera most serious amateurs would need unless they feel the need to go with a DSLR ( or just cannot stand the fact of not having the newest model!).

Ananth,

Most dealers only have a very miopic view of the world and that is usually based on their bottom line profits.

As far as the camera hirachy goes, well lets look at the manufacturers themselves. Nikon and Fuji are collaborative partners, I don't think Nikon would choose a patnering that was beneath them or that would tarnish their reputation. No one will debate the quality of a Hasselblad but few realize that they are now a part of Fuji. Based on this I would place Fuji pretty high up on the list.

Regardless of what the dealers, reviewers or I say you have look at and hold the cameras in your own hand and pick one that pleases you, feels good in your had, produces output that you are happy with and fits your financial situation.

I bought my S602 (my first digital camera) in November 2002 and I couldn't be happier. I had a friend who had done all the research and legwork before buying his S602 and then recommended the camera to me.

Here are some things that I have noticed since I bought my camera. A few people who learned I had gotten a digital camera immediately asked me if it was a Nikon (I guess because my other camera is a Nikon SLR)...Once I told them I had purchased a Fuji, their response was somewhat condescending as if to imply that Nikon, in particular, was the only brand of digital camera they would consider buying. [I didn't mean to pick on Nikon but it's just interesting how more than one person I know mentioned this brand specifically]

What I have found about the people who had this reaction is that they have not done their homework and that they are far more concerned with the name of the brand, to the extent that they are willing to pay large amounts of money for options they might never use.

The things I really enjoy about my S602:

-It functions very similarly to the Nikon SLR I own.

-It runs on AA batteries--I have spent big bucks on the batteries for my Nikon.

-It offers the flexibility of both Smart Media and Compact Flash.

-Macro mode is great.

-Burst mode is great.

-Movie mode is an added bonus.

Since buying my S602, I definitely think my photographs have improved. I would recommend a digital camera for this reason alone. I have more flexibility and freedom than I did with my SLR. With my SLR, only when I was taking a photography class did I have as much freedom as I am experiencing now.

I have seen the digital versus analog comparisons, but actually one factor that is rarely mentioned is the fact that you have to get the shot in order to make a comparison. For those with unlimited budgets to spend on processing film, it may not be such a big deal. In my case, I find I am not hindered by the fear of wasting money on developing photos that may not be exactly what I wanted. With digital, I find myself looking forward to experimenting and learning new techniques and I continue shooting until I get the photo I want.

Good luck whatever you decide to buy!

reading the replies in this thread (thank you guys!), I have decided to buy the S602Z. I found a site that gives the camera plus case, NiMH batteries, charger, 128MB card and mini tripod for 645$. It says this is a USA outfit deal, meaning it was manufactured in the USA I guess (as opposed to imported). Is that the norm? Are there any better deals out there? Can't wait to buy this camera!

I don't think your using logic on the issue of discontinued. There is not a camera on the market that will not eventually be discontinued. The 602 is a fantastic camera, buy it, and enjoy it. :-)

very convincing

Yeah, I probably should have thrown the opinion part in there. I rarely go by one person's opinion alone. I never personally really believed this "hearchy." Mostly because it changed regularly - Sometimes Minolta was in there - Sometimes Fuji was in there - heck I even heard KODAK was in there once. The thing I have learned, watching my fiance go through the SLR camera buying proccess, is that Camera Store salesman will almost invariably steer you toward Canon, Minolta and Nikon. wierd.......
