Will Canon printers clog if not used?

I just want to verify something I heard a day ago. If all I do is print 4x6's and I only send it a job once every month or two, will it clog? I don't plan to use it all that much apart from one or two vacation uberbatches a year.

If you print that infrequently then I would worry about the ink getting old and then clogging the head. I was away for 6 weeks so my S900 was just sitting there in dry winter air. No clogs.

How long does it take for ink to get "old" in your opinion? Also, if it does clog, what recourse is there? Do I have to get it serviced or does it have a built in cleaning utility? I'm thinking of an i850 or i950. Thanks!

I would consider 12 months as old. I have seen some weird particles beginning to settle in a 9 month old yellow cartrige I found under my desk (I should clean more often - grin :). The printers do the standard inkjet cleaning stuff but the head is easily removed and can be flushed with windex, distilled water or alcohol (according to a Canon rep I spoke with). For anything more serios Canon has been very good with replacing the heads. Someone even got a new head even after the printer was out of warranty.

Since it seems you've been at this a while, how many pictures do you get out of your ink cartridges before they run dry? I'm trying to figure out a final "ink cost" to home printing. Also what printer are you using currently? Thanks.

We have discussed this before and compared a few notes. For the canon i850/i950 using canon ink and paying full retail for the carts your cost will be about 80-90 cents for a 8x10 or 8.5x11 size print. If you get the best internet deals it will be more like 60 cents. If you use inkjet goodies ink it will be more like 4-6 cents per print. This can vary quite a bit based on the photos you are printing but these are fairly accurate ballpark figures. The i850 will go through carts faster but has less carts to replace so they both have similar printing costs. If anything the i850 might be a little cheaper but not enough to make a diffrence. Some carts will run out long before others so this is averaged.

Richard does your estimate (80-90 cents) include the cost of paper?

Here's an older thread that discussed i950 print costs. Look at my first post there for my estimated costs with Canon OEM ink.

My conclusion was (conservatively) about $0.54 per 8x10 for OEM ink, and then factor another $0.30-.40 for decent paper.
