10D vs S2: revealing test

Well, thanks for taking so much time to put that together. Not sure what your point is.... speaking for myself already owning the S2, and over $3K in Nikon glass, the 10D is not really of much interest. I would venture to say that all of the DSLR's produce great results with the right eye behind the box. To be honest, I find the 100% crop of the S2 to reveal more detail than the 10D, but the 10D sample is not really far off. Once again, though, other than passing interest, I'm not sure really what this test 'reveals'. Thanks for taking the time to come over and post in the Fuji SLR forum, always nice to see new faces :)

I cant really say I agree with your judgement......first of all the "9 mpix worth of info" is in the 12 mpixel images..not in the downsized 6 mpixel images. Getting 9 mpixel out of a 6 mpixel image sounds rather daft, doesnt it ?

So...the whole use of the higher resolution of the S2 is defeated by using photoshops downsizing ...since you remove detail from the original S2 image.

Much more usefull would be to upsize the 10D image to 12 mpixels, and THEN compare .

Another thing you could do is compare them at their highest native resolutions, and study image detail like the woodwork in your crop - allready showing superior detail with the S2 - at useless 6 mpixel.

Re-test, may I suggest?

I did not downsize in the 100% crops. That's why I stated that they are 100%.

I also stated earlier that I DID upsize the 10D images, NOT downsize the S2 images. You might want to read the shooting conditions again here:

Very good point.

I know I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other but it looked like the S2 was sharper and I don't own either camera.

They both look to be great cameras in their own ways. I saw some of the cannons and even the 14N from Kodak the other night and looked at large 4x3 foot print outs from each. When you blow these images up the defects become amplified.

Much to my surprise the 14N blew away all the Cannons in the comparisons. The 10D was noticeably worse than most of the other images. I was surprised at the results. BTW, they did not even have any Fuji’s or Nikons at this event. It would have been interesting.

What I did like about the 1Ds and something I would love to see with the S2, might even be able to do this via a ROM upgrade, is the ability to take both Raw and your choice of .JPGs at the same time. It would be nice if the S2 would allow you to send a set of your choice .jpgs to the second card slot.

In the end, this can all be like a book, two people reading it and coming to completely different conclusions. I think people have to buy what they feel comfortable with. I am just thankful we have the number of choices we do.

I love my S2, its feeling like I got what I paid for and more. To me, that’s all that matters. In time, better cameras with cheaper price tags are going to emerge. It’s a change that is inevitable and for those of you who have got to have the best, there are many dollars you’ll be spending moving forward. Right now, I feel like I have a camera that I can live with for a few years.

No matter what your choice is, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I am enjoying mine!

Take care everyone and follow your gut and try not to taunt each other too much! ;-)

I see there is a lot of talk about resolution test charts.

I am not a professional tester, nor do I care much about which camera does what when shooting a test chart. I have no pictures of test charts framed on my walls. What I do have is pictures from the real world, so, that's how I evaluate my cameras.
I'll leave the test chart analysis to someone else.
Thanks for looking, and thanks for the thougtful responses!
