How can I achieve the perfect portrait?

Another thought Illew, is to take a picture of the person with a monocolorbackground that is easy to remove in PhotoShop. Then take a picture of a suitable blurry background. Finally it should be quite easy to morph the images using layers and the right amount of blurring. This is something I´ve used from time to time.

Just blur the background using Photoshop.
I think this would be nearly impossible.
How could I select just the Person, the hairs and so on, when I
have many different colors in the background ??

llew: why dont' you just go with the telephoto? It works
gorgeously, in my opinion.
Hi Math,

yes, it definitely does. But sometimes, I am not able to step back and zoom in, that's the problem. Nevertheless, a telephoto lens is on top of my to-buy list, thanks!

Very good tip Rune, thank you, I will try this!!

I've had great results with a wide aperature and the 420ex held up and to the side with the off camera shoe cord using my G1. I also put a sto-fen omnibounce over the flash. I generally try and choose a neutral background such as straight curtains or a wall.

Good luck -I highly recommend the off-camera cable!

I love to take portrait photos with my G3. With portrait, I mean
the person / object in the front is in focus and the background is
blurry.

The only method I know to achieve that is to open the aperture to
its max and zoom a little to the person I want to photograph.

The problem is, sometimes I don't have enough room between the
camera and the person, or there's a wall behind the person, so it
doesn't get blurry.
I tried to make some shots in macro mode, but here the in-focus
range is very narrow.

How can I take nice shots under those difficult conditions and how
can I control the amount of blur in the background??

Thank you!!
Is there a way to shoot a portrait with an ixus v3? Is it impossible without manual shutter speed and aperture size?
