I am lucky to have the opportunity to upgrade my S230 to S400 for free! However, after reading all the reviews ...I am not sure if I should. Mainly because of the removal of the 640x480 movie feature. Does 320x240 noticeably different??? Pls help!! SHould I upgrade or hang on to my s230?

I've been debating the same thing...but I think I'm going to keep my S230. I can give up an extra zoom and external speaker and some other extras...I know the feeling, just wanting the latest, best toy! I'm going to keep my S230 as I've had it for only 4 months!

My next camera will be a camera will full manual control, maybe an S45 or G3. :)

I had the same problem. I sold my S230 on eBay and for 50.00 more bought the S400 from Dell using their 10% off, 35.00 coupon, and free shipping. You will love the S400 it is very nice. The video difference is hardly noticeable since it is improved over the S230's small video.

It seems that many S230 owners are going through this dilemma right now (should I upgrade to the S400?). I for one am ditching my S230 for the following reasons, in order of importance.

1) Redeye. I am tired of fixing eyes in photoshop, and the S230 is a redeye nightmare. Apparently the S400 is much better at reducing redeye.

2) 3X zoom. Elph owners have complained about the 2X zoom for years, and I don't blame them. Kudos to Canon for finally stepping up and stuffing a 3X zoom in these tiny cameras.

3) 4 MP. The largest I ever print is 8x10, so the S230 is fine, but with the S400 there will be more room for enlarging objects in the center of a pic (ie digital zoom).

4) Better battery life - the S400's more efficient use of power will let you take 30% more pictures per charge than the S230.

Of course, the S400 does not have the big movie mode. I admit that I like taking the occasional big movie, but at only 15 fps it is choppy, and I certainly can live without it. Hope this helps.

Lloyd, I guess I missed this feature in the reviews regarding more efficient use of power. Can you explain, or at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

I dont have any other Canon cameras and I had a Fuji FX1700 & 2 small Minoltas, the X and the F100, which I returned (X because of lens placement...my hair was in all the pictures when I used the optical viewfinder, and F100 because it was too big). But the one thing I dont like in the S400 is redeye. It is in almost every picture I have taken - whereas it was in NONE of my F100 photos (I was amazed at that). I wasnt using redeye reduction mode though for either camera - hate the delay and extra flash. But everything else about this camera I really like.

I have a similar problem, so I'll add it here rather than starting a new thread.

I've had my eye on the S230 since last November or so. Finally, last Friday, it was on sale for $345, so I bought it.

I'm happy with it for the most part, but more zoom would be nice, as well as more MP and less redeye. I have two weeks to decide if I will keep it or return it.

Right now, the S400 is going for $100 to $150 more than what I paid for my S230. To much money for the quality difference in my book. I would, however, be willing to pay $400 for the S400.

Does anybody here have experiene watching digital camera price changes care to estimate when the S400 will be available for $400? If it is in the next couple of months I think I'll return my S230. Please respond quickly.

Why did they get rid of the hi-res movie mode anyway? Is that a hint that the S400 is a mere stop-gap until something REALLY cool comes out?

TIA

I ordered the s400 from dell yesterday for $389 with free shipping.

$499 - $5o (10% off sale) - $35 (coupon) - $25 (for signing up for Dell credit card) = $389

the coupon was only for that one day yesterday, but you can get the other 2 today.

F100 wont have redeye coz the flash is way over to the left.

are you planning of getting f300 though?

Wow! Thanks a lot, Dave! $389 would make it a no brainer, but I think $425 is still just a tad too much. I'm sort of limiting myself to $400.

So, how often does Dell have deals like that? If it is pretty often, then maybe I'll take my S230 back. $345 isn't looking like such a good price anymore.

Do you think you'll miss the movie mode?

Anybody in the rumor mill hear when the next Elph is coming out? Anybody have any estimate on how long it'll take for the regular price on the 400 to come down?

I am so tempted to get the S400...but I'm going to wait for the next generation Elph that comes out...maybe this time with more manual controls...and 5MP...potential S500?? hehe

dell has these coupons all the time. Just check techbargains.com everyday.

I don't think that not having 640x480 movie modeis a reason not to get the s400. I had an a70 and I found the 640x480 movie mode a bit too jerky and the 30 secs a bit too limiting. Don't get me wrong 640 is nice, but not a deal breaker for me. I think that 320x240 is fine.

Like David Wang said, just keep a watch at techbargaines. I did this and got the S400 last Friday for $499 - 10% - $40 Coupon - $10 mail in rebate + free shipping = $399.10. Scheduled to be delivered 4/7.

Gotta love Dell and stackable coupons!

Damn it! I posted this exact question on Steves Digicams BBS last Friday before i bought the camera. I STILL haven't recieved a straight answer over there. If I had come here Friday instead, I'd have my S400 on the way.

Well, I have about 9 more days to decide if I'm taking the camera back. So, does Dell (or others) run deals like this roughly weekly, montlhly, quarterly, yearly, or what? I don't want to wait more than a month or two.

Dell keep runnning 10% plus one day only $30-40 off deal for digi cam, they had one yesterday. That'll bring the price on S400 to about $414 (with $35 off).

Just keep watching http://www.techbargins.com

Right now, it is $499. After that, they give a 10% discount, bringing it to $449. Canon gives a $10 rebate, lowering it to $439. I still have about $40 to go.

Thanks for looking though.

Sure Drew. I first saw it mentioned in the Steve's digicams review http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/s400.html . For the exact endurance difference I checked out the specs for both cameras at the Powershot website http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/home.html . These pages are jam-packed with useful info.

Lloyd
