As the subject title says, my apologies to all those who ordered from Dell after reading my post a few days ago.

As they say, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

Like the others who ordered after reading my post, I placed my order on 3/21 for a 10D at $1309 with the coupon and 10% off.

This morning I check my order status online, and guess what! it says, Your order has been cancelled at your request.

So I call up Dell, and while I could not reach the salesman with whom I had placed my order, I spoke with 2 different salespeople, both of whom confirmed that the order had been cancelled because "the camera is no longer available for ordering and we no longer expect to have them in stock", whatever that means. One salesman spoke with his manager, so I assume that's what the scoop is.

I assume that the rest of you folks who ordered from Dell on 3/21 are going through the same thing -- please check your order status to see if you have your orders cancelled too.

Again, I apologize, and from now on will refrain from ordering anything not computer related from Dell.

Although I did not order from Dell I can relate. While trying to save $75.00 I watched many people here get their 10D's from B&H Adorama etc. All I could do was grow more frustrated with Ritz with every passing day. I have learned my lesson, from now on it is B&H for me.

I gave the Dell ordering some thought, but have gone to a local shop instead. I guess it was the right move on my part. Dell delivered my E-20 just fine, as no local shop would stock one.

I think the 10D is changing some camera shop's approaches. DSLR with much accessory potential has become affordable (in relative terms to where they had been). The OLY peripherals were/are TOO EXPENSIVE and headed for obsolescence. Peripherals for DSLR systems have more usability within a larger grouping.
Thanks for trying on the Dell front.
Best,
Robert

20D!!!

Just kidding.

Not seen any in S'pore yet. Am waiting for Phil's review though. No hurry for me since I have the D60.

Yeang,

No change in my order status and no e-mail although I would expect notification since I have the e-mail set up to notify me when the camera ships.

I have seen wholesale prices quoted as $1225 and $1250 to camera stores. No telling what the big dealers like Dell get them for. A software company a friend is a division manager for negotiates prices on the camera's they buy with the manufacturer. However, even a small net that Dell is making to simply ship the camera's onward would be more than they often make on a computer system with the computer price battles that are usually taking place. The base computer is sometimes sold at only two to five percent mark up by computer companies and they make their profits on upgrades and changes. Too, they have to support their computer systems. If we are lucky Dell will exchange defective camera's, if we aren't lucky or they no longer handle them they'll simply shunt us over to Canon. Looking at all this it is easy to see why digital camera sales are attractive to a computer company.

Why don't you guys just order from your local camera shop? I got my10D the day they came out from mine. I also got my d60 the day they came out. That way if you have a problem, you can get it dealt with. Sure you may pay list price...But I shoot my 10D everyday and you guys are all stressed out waiting for your cameras. Get a relationship with your local salesman, and you will find that he will take care of you. In both cases, I got the first camera released in my area! Just my two cents. And the 10D really is a fantastic camera! Good luck.

If my dell order fails, I will certainly buy local. The only point in buying from dell was to save $268. Please don't begrudge me that.

I still haven't received email notification of my Dell 10D from the 3/12 frenzy. It shipped on 3/19 and was in my hands 3/20.

Any DSLR beats unexposed film.

Randy,

I have to ask, did you pay $1999 for your camera? Paying a five to seven hundred dollar premium for local service is no bargain in my opinion.

Lew,

You are probably right about the e-mail notification. That is why I check my order regularly too. However I've had enough stuff land on my doorstep while the paperwork says it is still on the other side of the country to not put too much faith in tracking information.

From what I noticed earlier I think I'll cancel my order when I get tired of waiting. That seems to be the surest way of getting one shipped out.

Hu

I know of no local store, at least in my area, selling the camera for more than $1499. They seem to be matching the online vendors.

That's funny. Dell will not let me cancel my order.

Yeang,

As I had written when I ordered on 3/22, Dell was the one who called me back at 7 am PST saying that they were returning my call from the night before. They ( Chrissey), wanted to know if I was still interested in the purchase of a 10D at the price of $1349 and that they would honor the $40 coupon since I did call before its expiration at 10pm, 3/21 PST. So I ordered. I have a D60 and am very happy with it and I am in no real rush to get the 10D. I just checked my order status and it says planned delivery date is 4/14/03. The order is still active. I will assume that there will probably be a further delay... I will continue to shoot with the D60. If the 10D arrives at my door step soon, I will be extremely happy...if it doesn't then I hope Dell has the decency to e-mail about that.

I hope you get your status cleared up or maybe since you were sort of the first to order, we are next to be notified...we'll see.

Good luck...in any case because of you I may get a 10D for an amazing price!! Thanks again...

I have a friend flying to the UK next week.

Does the S$2800 include GST? (tax)
Is it in stock?
Are there any better deals in Singapore?

K.A.

I got a call from Cathay Photo today saying its in. Retail at
S$2,800.

Yes, its in stock and inclusive of GST. Better be fast though... Limited stock available. I have not seen the camera at any other stores, but if your friend buys and leaves the country with it, I believe he/she can claim back GST from airport custom.

Its going at S$2,750 with GST at the Marina Square branch... Still in stock as of Friday.

...to be dissatisfied with Dell's honesty/service/etc.

So you're gonna "punish'" them by ordering more (computer) stuff...which is the only stuff they will really sell you anyway.

Yep, ...you'll show them!!

Inscrutable!
