Hi:

Of all the current D60 owners, what are your thoughts on the 10D, especially those who have just purchased the D60 prior to is retirement!! It's upsetting but expected that a newer model would come and with a lower price. I just didn't expect the drop to be so much or the introduction to be so soon. At first I was thinking, I could sell my practically new D60 for $1800 to $2000 before the big wave of 10D purchasing came and put in an order for one at $1500. But then I would be out the camera until the new one came. Also, once the 10D hits the majority of potential buyers, the demand for D60s and its price would drop. D30s are almost or already selling for less than a grand! The window of opportunity to change is either slim or already gone! Oh well, in the end, I will just keep it.... Anyways, just looking for what others are doing.

Thanks,
Eric

I plan on waiting and keeping my D60 for now. I think the Autofocus on the D60 sucks, as does the autoexposure. It really does cost me a significant amount of photos. I've learned to overshoot, but it's nonetheless irritating.

I've heard rumors (completely unsubstantiated but I'm listening nonetheless) that canon will be coming out with a middle priced, middle featured digicam sometime this fall. The 1Ds is just too overpriced for me right now. So, I'm saving up money in the hopes that when the digital Elan 7e comes out, I'll be ready for it. If it doesn't, I'll see about buying a 1Ds with a loan, or maybe a 1D, as they're priced at about $3,000 right now. I'm at the point where I feel I need to move up to a more pro-ish camera. The limitations of the one I have are starting to become an issue. However, for tabletop work (which I do a bit of) the D60 shines. It's RAW images can be blown up as big as you want, and they still look amazing.

My feeling is that Canon didn't intend for the 10D to be a real "upgrade" for the D60.

It was released because they needed to be at that price point with that level camera and it would have been marketing suicide to lower the price of the D60 that much.

I think the real upgrade for the D60 is coming down the pike in late summer (or Photokina).

current D60 owners, what are your thoughts on the 10D
I bought mine some 5 months ago while knowing that the 10D was coming. I'll keep my D60 untill there is either:

1) a 24 million bayer pixel DSLR with at least the same image quality at below 2000$

2) a 6 million true RGB pixel DSLR with at least the same image quality at below 2000$

3) a 12-million bayer pixel DSLR or a 3 million true RGB pixel DSLR with considerably better image quality.

By better quality I mean larger dynamic range and lower noise level.

While waiting I'll just take pictures.

I do not beleive that the 10D would make me any better as a photographer and I'm sure that the 10D will not give any better image quality than the D60.

I am keeping mine for a while anyway. I purchased my d60 last Nov. I never use autofocus or any of the program modes anyway and what little I have read, the only advantage to the d10 is the autofocus and better use with the speedlights. The only way I will purchase another is if the 1ds comes down. What I have seen and read, that camera is awsome.

please read the following with a sense of humor but an underlying seriousness:

no one can tell the difference without having both cameras in hand. therefore unless one wants to own or borrow both (? the reason) no one can truly tell the difference.

i'm keeping the D-60 until I can:

1) learn to be slower and think more in setting up shots that don't move.
2) learn that a tripod is actually a really good thing.
3) learn to use manual focus and not complain about autofocus.

4) have a client ask why i'm using a 'toy' instead of a camera, just before he asks if i can handle a $15,000 assignment.
5) have a rich relative die and leave me a wad of cash.
6) have my son change his mind about me paying for grad school.

by the time any of the above happen we'll be ready for a $1,000 DSLR that shoots full (no 1.6X) at 48 mb file, with precision auto focus and no brand name all over it.

the D-60 may not be a true "PRO" cam, but it pays the bills and is fun.

cheers.

I thought about selling the '60 on eBay for a while, but I'm glad I didn't. I couldn't have standed to be without a camera indefinately. If I didn't already have a D60 I would definately buy a 10D instead ... but since I already have one, there's really no point.

The main advantages are slightly improved autofocus, and better performance at higher ISOs. I mostly shoot landscapes; they don't move very fast, and ISO 100 is more than fast enough. The reason I bought and use a D60 is it's image quality; the 10D doesn't seem to have improved on that very much. ( Especially in RAW mode! )

I don't think having a 10D would have made any of these photos any better:

Those are very nice pics. That one with the stick almost looks 3d. I am keeping my d60 for the simple fact that I don't want to take a big loss on it when I just got it. I bought it knowing about the 10d coming out. But, I had jobs that I could do and felt that I needed at least the d60 to do them. My trusty old oly just wasn't fast enough and I wanted more control over dof. The truth is I need a couple more cameras as backups and I am glad that the 10d came down in price. That way I don't have to pay more for another backup or main camera. I am planning on either a 10d or 1d. Having trouble deciding. I guess i'll get both. I am thinking on the 10d first and if I still need the 1d by mid summer then i'll get one of those too.

OK, I'll keep it! Just what I was going to do anyway. Thanks for all the thoughts. I'll wait for next level camera down the road. In the mean time, it's still the best DSLR I've owned or used. If I go down each improvement or upgrade of the 10D as compared to the D60, there is no real glowing feature that stands out enough. There is one concern though. What about the fact that the 10D has a wider gamut (Adobe RGB) while the D60 only has one color space (sRGB)? It is really evident when the colors are very close together like the crayon pictures in the 1D review. Can I color profile the camera with profiling software to get around this? Maybe this has been discussed in another topic?

Thanks,
Eric

What about the fact that the 10D has a wider gamut
(Adobe RGB) while the D60 only has one color space
(sRGB)?
Both have the higher bit-depth linear RAW mode and at least with the D60 the gamut of that mode is very large. You did not spend some 2500USD just to take the miserable JPEGs with all the artifacts in them?

A larger gamut than the sadRGB indeed is beneficial and very desirable, with many scenes there is no difference and/or the difference is negligible but sometimes small gamut renders the image directly to the recycle bin.

OK, I understand now. For critcal work, I have been shooting RAW to have a digital negative. From there, I use either 8bit or 16bit tiffs. For less critical work, I use the JPEG/sRGB. Thanks for the clearing up. The advantage of the 10Ds Adobe color space isn't as a big as I originally thought. Now, I'll start researching the PS plug-ins for a Canon RAW converter. I believe one just came out.
