No buds or flowers... Just these guys.

Anybody know what this fellow is? We get lots of them around here. Sorry if the image seems too large... The smaller version was too soft looking. I'm still trying to get the hang of this posting thing...

This bugger was warming himself on a rock... while his kid brother skidded past my feet...

The top one is about the size of a belt and the guy in the bottom shot was about the size of a shoelace

keep those guys for yourself! How close were you? I have seen a bug very much like this one except is was a metallic gray and not so hairy. It was about 3 inches long.......strange looking! You have certainly reminded me that those things as well as flowers are on the way! Great pics.

I just want to learn photography...

Sorry girl, I have to agree with Tim on this one.. don't know what the bug is.... but I think he's right about the macro shots on the snakes... they look like harmless little garter snakes... they don't bite.. hard...lol. We used to catch them all the time when we were kids. grin
Can't wait for the shots.. (o:

the first shot...we always called that a stink bug...smash it and see if it smells funny, then I'm sure. Nice macro.

The snakes are garter snakes...harmless, but they like to hold on when they bite...lol. I really like the first pic of the snake.

I'm with Willa . . . that second shot is incredible! (The little garter snake with his head up and the valley behind him)

Is this supposed to be some kind of defense mechanism? If you have to smash it for it to work it sounds a little ineffective...

Yup, I found out the hard way, although it is surprisingly painless anyway...
And thank you for the complement!

I must say, complements form such skilled photographers are the best encouragement in the world!

The snakes look like garter snakes (Thamnophis sp.), commom around water and harmless guys. Not sure about the beetle - nice shots though - shelley

I knew what the snakes were, just not the bug. I found out that garters are a bit aggressive, so though they are certainly non-poisonous, but not entirely harmless! (still, they do clean up the place, they cut down on crickets and other creepy crawlies)
I'll post a pic of the bite mark if I can find it...
Sue

I don't know what the bug is. Yuck. The snakes look like garter snakes? I was bitten by a black snake once and it left two little fang marks. And I was trying to help him out too by getting him off the road where he was sunning himself. If you grab them behind the head, they can't bite you but you have to be fast. I wasn't fast enough :)

Great shots. I like critters. Keep 'em coming.
