Some talk around here lately about color in the various dslrs.

Anyone care to guess what popular dslr made these shots? I'll only say about them that NO COLOR ADJUSTMENTS were made in Photoshop. They were shot in raw format, click white balanced, and RGB levels adjustments (I shoot in low contrast mode and adjust later in PS... no individual color channel adjustments were made in Levels, though... just RGB), and a custom profile was assigned.

My guess = D60... and btw let me finally tell you that I am indebted to you for sharing your Photoshop actions. They have really added some zip to some of my portraits.

Now remember, I asked "why digital SLR". Not which CANON digital SLR. In fact, these shots were made nearly two and half years ago using the original Nikon D1 and a Nikkor 28-105 (great lens). The D1's color has been much maligned ever since it was first released, and indeed, until custom profiles became available for it, I was constantly frustrated myself. However, when used with a good lens (VERY important with this camera) and a custom profile, the color, even from a JPG, could be very, very good. In other respects, the original D1 was quite a solid machine ... strong build, fast 4.5 fps, very nice AF, good flash metering.

Nonetheless, when I bought a D30 just for fun, I wasn't expecting the color to be so easy compared to the Nikon. And of course, the higher ISO blew the Nikon away. (I almost never shot anything but 200 on the Nikon. Even 400 had alot of noise.) The D30 was such a joy to use, and the results so easy to achieve, the Nikons quickly took the backseat. I bought another D30 and then two D60 bodies when they arrived. The Nikons were promptly sold. I still miss the tough-as-nails feel and the fast AF, but the Canons have really delivered.

Anyway, I came across these images from the past and was struck by the color being better than I probably gave the D1 credit for. Thought it might be fun to share how 'awful' Nikon's color can be!

Thanks for participating!

Thanks for the nice comments. Although the actions need updating (I know, I've been saying I'd do it for months), they are available for free on my website.

Michael,

Do you still shoot low contrast with your d60? Do you use the auto contrast action in your "Daily D60 actions" set to compensate. What different results do you achieve by doing this?

I am greatly appreciative of all the tips you have provided the group and use your actions on a daily baisis.
Thank you!
Steve
