New S400 Test shots!

I received my S400 this afternoon. I took several shots of our lab and was suprised at how sharp and noise free they were. I am very happy with the quality.
These are very simple shots but show the quality of the images this
camera can produce. So far I'm quite impressed with the sharpness,
color, and image quality!

These are very nice. Any post processing at all?

I continue to be awed and suprised by how well this cam appears to be doing with these flash people pics in regard to red eye.

My guess would be this is your son and you've taken more than these couple shots of him. :-) Any thoughs on red eye on the rest of the shots?

thanks,

.. right out of the camera. No post processing. And so far I've taken 5 or six pics of the kids and none show red eye. I don't even have the redeye flash setting on. Pretty amazing.
I'll shoot some daylight shots today.

but I would agree with your comment that there is a tendency for softness right out of the camera. Nothing a little USM can't fix of course. This is better than what I've seen with most of the other lines (Sony, Oly, Kodak, Minolta) who overcook the shots to the point they look like someone did a PS oil effect on them.
Any shots of people/faces?

I didn't own a 230, though I considered it. Having tried a couple of S330's I was very disappointed in the quality. And when I've looked at the review sites on the S400 many of the example shots also look a bit soft - especially closeup shots. My eyes search and search to see where the focus point is, and I can't find it.

You shots don't show this, and neither do the ones I've taken with my new S400. Therefore my expectations have been greatly exceeded and I'm thrilled with my new little travel camera!

It doesn't even compare with the s230 ....by faaaar much better
than s230
I agree that they look good, but my S230 takes pictures that are
just as good - look for yourself: http://www.pbase.com/rybber

The extra 1 MP does not make the difference...

One place most all the pics I've seen from s400 (I don't own either camera, only seen samples online) seem to beat the s230, and most other smaller cameras, is in red eye.

I'm not sure how they are doing it; but, the s400 seems so far to me to have excellent flash people pics.... without redeye.

I'm curious to see more along these lines as for me a small camera like this would be employed in that capacity fairly often.

Hi

My screen is showing 1024x768 pixels. When I view a photo in ACDsee it is resized to fit my screen. I think that the bigger the picture that is resized the softer it will look. If I view my pictures at 100% they don't look soft at all...

Closeup shots are fine I think. Just check what the camera is focusing on (green boxes) before taking the picture.

Perhaps you're not aware of it, but consider what you're doing to those poor birds. No bird was ever meant to be confined in this type of ridiculously small cage. I can't understand with all the knowledge we have today about animals, someone would still choose to torture one like this. To me you're no better than a guy who drags a disobedient puppy behind his car at 60mph. Shame on you.

I does capture more detail. We can go on this and end up concluding that 640x480 would "be enough" :-)

Also the red-eye seems improved.

Unfortunately it seems to share a lot of the S230 like the chromatic aberrations. I am waiting for the FinePix F700 at this point.. hoping Fuji delivers on their promises.

Better or not? Difficult to say. It certainly has some features that the S230 doesn't. However, does this create better picutures???? I am not sure. There are too many variables such as conditions, subject and user error. For my use, emailing pics and taking short videos my S230 works for me perfectly. Maybe the extra 1mp is needed by others though.

I have had the S230 for two weeks and bought it knowing that the S400 was coming. However, I found the S230 $300 vs. street price of $470 for the S400 it was an easy decision. Plus I use the 640X480 video alot. It is great fun. Both are good cameras but, I think I will wait for the S600 before I spend more money.

Are you kidding?? How can you tell how large the cage is from this shot?? This cage is quite large - you're only seeing a bit of it in this shot.

These are parakeets for goodness sake! And they get to fly around the house several times a day - we don't keep them in the cage all the time.
Maybe you should go back and cruise the PETA forums, Barney.

Thanks for the response, Steve.

From exifreader is shows the flash was set to "forced" for the shot "blue eyes smiling". Is that right? How come you used forced instead of auto?
How come not the "red eye" mode... just because it hadn't come up yet?

Just don't forget that even Fuji dynamic is better, this comes at the cost of resolution and, possibly, slightly increased noise (according to S-CCD IV diagramm from Fuji). That's the thing that can be sufficient to decide not to choose F700. As details are important and IMHO Fuji 602 with generation III S-CCD can't beat Canon G3 in resolution.

I'm just playing with the camera - haven't even opened the manual yet. The only setting changes I made before shooting was to set superfine mode.

Come one man...How can you say that. s400 takes much more sharper pics than that noisy s230
