I just started to play around with the program Neat Image. It seems like a nice program but I do not like the output file size. If I start with a 5 mb JPEG after I'm done it is only 1mb. Is this just the info it is "cleaning" that I'm missing?? How can the output image size be changed if at all? Thanks in advance!

Hi Paul,

You are using the Demo version. You have to get the "Paid for" version to have better output options.

True the Demo version has less output options in other file formats, but their feature map indicates that all versions have the same output for Jpeg.

The only thing that should be missing is the extra noise clutter data and EXIF information if saving back to Jpeg. If this is not correct then their page is wrong. However, in my experience even with the "less noise colors", the file size for a filtered saved Jpeg seems VERY small, but that's with my processed psd/jpegs where more information is stored. If you look at a normal 1600x1200 high detail JPEG right from a point and shoot - you'll be looking at about a 700k file. Once Neat Image filters it before it's processed in editing apps, it generally takes off about 200-300k. That seems about right to me and you end up with a file size between 300-500k, but the smaller file definately makes you think twice...

Stuff looks great no matter the size, and is a real help when other apps can't make em shine...

Are you sure the original is 5mb is before it is expanded? Look at the size in Windows explorer. It sounds like the 1mb may be the jpg size and the 5mb the expanded size.

The demo version I used would not let you save to jpg. only BMP which of course will be less colors and size. Did they change the demo?.. The paid version allows output in several formats and the files do not shrink.

Have you downloaded the latest version of the demo? The previous version 1.1 which I had only allowed BMP saves. The newer demo is a LOT better than the previous version I had and allows JPG saves. And a LOT easier to understand and use.
Cheers, Sandi

Irregardless of the filesize question...if you have the full paid version you then get an AUTO Profile click-on button which is immensely useful. I'm sure I need not comment on the headaches of getting a Profle (incidentally I suppose many/most know that Neat Image do provide a lot of ready-made Profiles (free) which are quite a useful stater help...but the Auto is really a tremendous difference..and for the most part it works really well..and takes away SO much hassle

You get the autoprofiler with the demo version as well.
I tried neatimage a few months ago but it was too complicated for me.

Hi again Paul,

There appears to be some confusion over the JPEG compression in Neat Image.

The user manual states the following for the paid for version "When you save the output image in JPEG format, you can select the compression quality."

Thank you all for your comments/help. I think I will just go ahead and upgrade to the home version and play with it. The program itself really is remarkable with it's output. Thanks again:)

If you're worried enought about quality to want to get rid of noise, you should not resave as JPG which will increase compression artifacts. You should save as TIFF after processing.
