AF lock and cable release?

Hi Christopher,

Most times I use my cable release it's for static subjects. If AF is easy, I just look through the viewfinder, halp press cable release, lock focus and full press. If AF is hard (i.e. Moon shots), I do MF. AF lock works with the cable in the same way it does when you directly press the shutter.

Best,
Dioni

Thanx, my problem was trying to position the tripod holding down the AF lock and pushing the release at the same time. My third arm would have come in handy. Sometimes the AF is better than my ageing eyes in the too small viefinder.

Hello Chris,

I had the same problem. This is what I do and it seems to work pretty well.

1. Go to custom menu 9 and change it from 0-AE/AF lock to 4-AF operation. This will change the auto focus button from the shutter button to the AE-L/AF-L button by where you change your metering mode.

2. Set the focus mode selector switch on the front of the camera to C. This will let you take a picture when the focus area indicator is on something that isn't in focus.

Normally (default settings) if you focus on the close eye in a portrait (for example), recompose so the focus are indicator is on something else, it will refocus as you press the cable release or it won't let you take a picture because it isn't in focus..

With it set up as outlined above, I:

focus on the close eye by putting the center focus area indicator on the close eye, pressing the AE-L/AF-L button until it is in focus (you don't have to hold anything down), recompose the shot,Press the remote release.

Let me know if it doesn't work.

-Thanx b.p.; I will give this a try. I thought it was a stupid question but am happy to see you have found an answer. Now I won't be afraid to ask more what seem to be stupid questions.
