Could someone help with a question regarding screen capture or as some call it a snapshot. How is this done. I would like to send someone a histogram or show them my history palette. I have also seen this on various tutorials on how to do things with photoshop etc.
Many thanks.

Hi Nelson.

Try Analog-X. It's a freeware program that I've been using for about 2 years now with excellent results. Download it and give it a try.

Hope this helps.

If you are using Windows OS, select the window which has the histogram or anything else of interest, hold down the ALt key (use Control key if you want the entire screen) and press Print Screen function key on the upper right of the keyboard. Open your favorite image editing application and do Edit/Paste.

That method does'nt always work, and it does'nt seem to at all with Photoshop. The capture, in essence, has no file format that can be recognized by PS, and therefor will not immediately be recognizede or opened within it.

The Analog-X program I mentioned earlier will automatically save either an entire window or a window within (fully selectable from a taskbar icon) and will capture it, and save it as a .BMP file to a folder on the hard drive, and from there it can be opened in PS by simply going to File/Open and browsing to that folder.

Similar with ULTRASNAP, a program I have used very satisfactorily for a long time ...also better still in the capability to capture different sections in different shapes if needed..HYPERSNAP. Both very excellent programs... not ignoring about 4 or 5 others I've got on my Start list to choose as I wish. There are plenty to choose from, some freeware , some at modest Shareware charge...but the freeware do an excellent general purpose job

David,

That's strange. I just tried it with Photoshop Elements and it worked fine. I've been doing screen captures that way for a long time and, usually, any program which can accept a paste from the clipboard will accept a screen capture done that way. I'll admit that I've done select and copy operations where I get the wrong format message you refer to. I don't recall seeing it with the ALT-Prt SC technique though.

By the way, this technique also works with Irfan View and a few other I've tried, including Microsoft Word.

I guess it's something I'm doing wrong then. Apologies to the original poster of the advice and to all concerned.

I just find using the freeware Analog-X screen capture utility and others like the ones mentioned by the previous poster much easier to work with, and easier to specify specific portions within windows to capture, as well as it's ability to automatically assign the capture a .BMP file format....that way, the file can be saved indefinitely on the hard drive folder without even having to go into a image editing app immediately.
Thanks for the correction though.

If the data from the clipboard (put there with the prt scr button on your keyboard, sometimes combined with the alt or ctrl key) can't be pasted into your preffered photoeditor, open the standard photo editor or even paint included in the windows OS (I assume you're on windows).
