Nikon View - PC Lockup Problems

Running PC with Win98SE, 256 MegRam, Dazzle CF reader attached to USB.

Continue to experience PC lockup with ALL versions of Nikon View (thru 5.1.4). Installation of Nikon View places "nkvmon.exe" in start-up, and, I assume is there to detect the presence of a CF card or other image device.

On boot "nkvmon.exe" runs and (a big IF), if my CF card is in the CF reader, it may run OK, but most likely not. If I do not have a CF card in the CF reader, it ALWAYS locks up. By lock-up, 1 of 2 things happens. The worse is my system freezes and not even Ctrl/Alt Del will restart. The other likely result is if I use Ctrl/Alt Del to bring up Task Manager, "nkvmon.exe" displayed as "Not Responding". In which "End Task" usually locks up PC anyway.

I have tried the following with NO luck.

1. Using "msconfig" to selectively choose startup options. De-select "nkvmon.exe". After I apply and restart system, this damn option is still selected.

2. Within Nikon View I select the preference to NOT load automatically. Still no luck.

No matter what, I just can't seem to keep "nkvmon.exe" from starting. My only option was to uninstall Nikon View. As long as I can continue to use Nikon Capture, I guess I can live without Nikon View (lots of other browsers), but when shooting RAW (NEF), my options are limited.

Found no help on Nikon site. Doe's anyone know how to resolve this or at least a work-around?

Help!!

I've also had problems with Nikon View running on several Win 98 machines. Problem appears to have been solved and system is running fine under XP.

I'm also having a terrible time trying to install and use Nikon

View on a Win 98 machine. I've been using an HP 2210 all-in-one with an integrated card reader to download images from Viking and Lexar CF cards. This works fine until I install Nikon View. After installing Nikon View updated to 5.1.4 the problems begin: the PC doesn't recognize the CF card and I get lock-ups and abnormal shutdowns from Windows. I've tried uninstalling the HP software and the Nikon software in every conceivable order, but nothing works unless Nikon View is uninstalled. I got some really interesting error messages when I tried a "Custom Installation of Nikon View".

Nikon tech support has offered nothing useful.

Has anyone been able to use Nikon view with an HP all-in-one?

I got a new e-mail from Nikon support that gave a solution that worked for me.

I took their advice and gave up trying to use the card reader in my HP all-in-one to download images. Plugging the camera into the PC works fine, and I don't have any shutdown errors either. The only potential problem on the horizon is that I might run out of battery power during a long download. I guess I'll buy an AC adaptor for the camera.

Here's my last correspondence with Nikon. Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the good advice. So far, so good. I uninstalled all the Nikon View software and reinstalled Nikon View 5.1.3. I then tried connecting the camera directly to the second USB port on my PC and everything seems to be working fine. I'll do a new download of 5.1.4 and let you know how things are going after I install it.

Pat: Again the Viking card is not supported with the 5700 as in(you will have problems with that card even if it worked a few times prior). The card slot in your printer is also not supported as a means of transferring images via Nikon View. Have you connected the camera itself to the system with a supported flash card to transfer this way??? Again if non supported methods work in the past the fact of the matter is that the devices are not supported because (you will have a problem with them at some point). Save yourself allot of hassle and use the camera as directed in the manual. The 5700 is an excellent camera "my personal favorite" and you should enjoy the product without hassle by connecting the camera to the system instead of placing the card in the printers card reader. It is exceptable to use the printer card reader as a means to direct print from the card to the printer but not to transfer images.

Thank You
