Hi All,

I have what I hope is a simple question. If I want to use an external falsh (like the SB-28) with the coolpix 950....and have just the external falsh fire....all I have to do is go to M-rec and then through the menu shut off internal falsh. This then results in just the external flash firing and has worked fine. If I then go to A-rec (with the internal falsh still set to of through the M-rec menu)...both the internal as well as the internal flash fire (again while I am in A-rec). I looked for a menu setting in A-rec to shut off internal falsh but there isn't any as far as I can see. If I use the flash button on top of the camera to shut off flash while in A-rec..then neither flash will fire. My question is..

!. Is there a way to get an external flash to fire but keep the internal falsh off while in A-rec. Someone told me they were able to do this but I don't see how.
Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The answere is ... use M-Rec. Why not? If you set it to program mode, auto white balance, and the appropriate LCD choice, it should shoot exactly like A-Rec.

MY RESPONSE:

I appreciate all those that have replied so far and their suggestions are correct (and I am aware of them)....still I would like to know speciafically the answer to my question if the internal flash can be turned off completely yet the externally attached fires, while in A_ rec-mode. It's something I'm trying to duplicate that another person a while back says is possible Thanks!

Regars,

I don't think so. A-Rec is basically for idiot proofing. Check the manual. If it can't be set in the menu while in A mode then I don't believe you can change the behaviour in A-Rec. I seem to recall that there are one or two exceptions to this rule but don't think the flash is one of them.

Dave,

The manual indicates that you can not disable the internal flash in A-Rec. However, I seem to recall some people posting threads that indicated when setting the lens feature to wide angle, the only things the camera did differently were to not zoom out on powerup and DISABLE THE FLASH! I don't know if the external flash would fire or not. You might experiment with setting up your camera this way and see.

MY RESPONSE:

Thanks to Don and all others who took the time to respond to my question. Except for maybe setting the camera perminately to wide angle upon power up, I think everyone is correct and that there is no way to turn off the internal flash and yet have the external falsh fire while in A-rec mode. I may have an oportunity to speak to the person (later this week) who claimed he did it. If I find out anything differently, I'll be sure to post it. Thanks again
