It's not that I can't afford a 10d or even a used d60. I just cant afford the lens I want and the camera I want.
So I'll go to ebay to look for a d30.
Whats a fair price for a mint condision d30 ?

I have this theory "little gun big scope"

Any nice comments welcome

Just kidding. $750 would seem fair at this point...

I was expecting to see a pic of Dr. Evil.. :-)

Yeah, $750 is about right. A lot of d30's aren't selling on eBay when they want over 900 for them. I saw them go for between 800 and 850 last week. It changes everyweek though.

I think $750 for a D30 is a little low considering that you can get a G3 for around $600, which is nice but nothing compared to a D30. I think a fair value for the D30 would be in the $850-$950 range. The D60 should be going for $1,100 to $1,200 used.

For most users, a G3 is a much better choice than D30. Just look at the complaints of softness on this board. Do most non-pro photographers really want to spend much time in post-processing? It's like, for most commuting purpose, a Corrolla is a lot better than a prized race horse, even if the latter costs more at its prime.

Good for you! While some will opt out for a more costly camera body and pick up a cruddy lens, you are going to take advantage of a D30....which is still a very decent camera........and buy a better lens with the money you save....BRAVO!! Now, to answer your question, I'd say that the D30 could go for as little as $800.00.....not bad eh?......it was "only" $3,000.00 a year ago selling as new! I'll bet that if you buy one on e-bay, .....and it is in mint shape, it was probably owned by some camera collecting junky who often posts here talking about how he NEEDS a replacement body for his nifty Sigma lenses.....(so he can take better pictures of his cat)......(or birthday party snaps)...........whatever...........I'm sure it has very very low milage on it.......unlike mine..... As you take a look at the pics on my site; to look at an "inferior" camera....the EOS D30......all the ones I posted with copyright years 2002 and 2003 were taken by my "old" D30. :-)

With any DSLR you will be doing some kind of modifying to the photos to get the best out of them. The D30's sharpness can be increased but most want the image as raw as possible and do any processing in software. This is the key to the DSLR's that are out there - they allow you to process the shot to tweak it and yet keep the quality. A G3 image will degrade quickly if it's processed - not to mention if the shot wasn't taken at ISO 50. The G3 has it's purpose as a point-n-shoot but can't compare to a D30 when it comes to all things. That's where DSLR's shine, not just the D30, mostly because of the larger image sensor (not MP size) and the quality of the various ISO settings vs the smaller image sensors in the consumer cameras like the G3. I still own my Canon PowerShot Pro70 and while I do think in some ways it's better it can't compare to a D30. Things that make the D30 better are it's photo taking speed, photo quality, various ISO settings, etc. If I got a G3 today it would replace my Pro70 but not my D30/D60.

For most people, the ease with which one can get a good (or even excellent) picture is what matters, not how "outstanding" a picture can be if a ton of work is put into it. Otherwise, using film, scan, then sharpen would get you an even better ultimate possibility of "outstanding" result than D30, or even 10D. The lighter work flow (hence the likelihood of getting many good/excellent shots as opposed to just a handful of outstanding ones amidst of pile of mediocre ones due to resource and time limitation) is a significant part of digital advantage.

Of course, a G3 would be replacement for the Pro70, just like if you suddenly get a 10D for free now (we can all dream ;-), you are probably more likely to replace the D30 with it instead of the Pro70. Okay, after getting the 10D, use the funds from selling the D30 to buy a G3 to replace the Pro70 would be most ideal ;-)

Somebody seems to be selling a lot of brand new D30 cameras on Ebay for $700 each. There seems to be some real good deals out there if you are willing to search for them.

I've been following the used d30 for the past several weeks and $800 for a good used one seems to be a good price.

I just purchased a New in box one off ebay for $700.00. As soon as I saw the $700 I bought one.

$700 for a D30 or a 717/5700? I think the choice is obvious, unless you are dodging lens collecting.

My uneducated guess as to where the prices will slowly settle:
$1300 - New D10
$1000 - D60
$700 - d30

Paul

PS - Now I need to find a lens to buy.

Thanks for all the responses. I did go to ebay and bought a brand new D30 for $700

I do have two point and shoot cameras a canon s330 good for family snap shots. And A Fuji 602 this 602 is a fine camera but I find it limited with its electric view finder and permanetly attached lens. I want dslr so I might expand my photography skills.

I have found the most frugal way to buy digital camera's is to buy dicontinued models or wait untill newer models are out.
Two or three years from now I'll be in the market for a 10D

I've been waiting for the d30 to drop to a reasonable price so I could start buying decent accesories. I didn't feel comfortable buying a bunch of paraphanelia for a prosumer camera like my nikon 995.

I've been trying to decide what lens to get for my d30. I think the obvious choice is Canon's 1.8 50mm lens. I'm going to have to live with that for a few months while I save up for a L zoom lens or another prime. What Lens(es) are you thinking about getting?

Paul,

For my money, you can't go wrong starting with the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens.

The three reasons I've found over the years are: 1) small, light but still well-made (not as sturdy as the f1.4, but 1/3rd the cost

2) much, much better shots than any zoom you could buy for even $20 more.

3) if you pay a little attention to how you compose shots with the 50mm, you'll find you're much more pleased with the results of the bigger lenses when you get them.

--Learning composition and light with a 50mm isn't always the most fun in the world, but it's one of the best lessons you'll ever learn.
