Hello my friends...Hopefully you can help me out.

I was taking some pics throughout the weekend and the dust on my ccd was finally to the point where it was showing on normal shots. Yes I checked my lenses. The spots were in the same place no matter which lenses I used. I also took a hurricane bulb with the mirror locked up and attempted to blow the dust out. I could see a few tiny tiny spots on the ccd that would just not blow away. Alas, it was time to pull out the sensor swabs and Eclipse solution. I had two swabs which I figured would be fine given the success that people here have had.

I ran through the instructions, and after the first two swipes I had a couple of tiny streaks left and ran through with the second swab. I thought that things looked okay, but when I put my lens back on and shot the sky with the lens stopped way down, it looks DISGUSTING! I've got streaks and junk all over! Now I'm out of swabs and of course Fuji is closed on Sunday, and I'm worried about leaving this stuff on my CCD! My local camera store that carries more swabs is also closed on Sunday!

Any advice?

Thanks,

Teski

Hi Teski
I cleaned my camera with the swabs for the second time in six months last week.

I also used 2 swabs but with the help of the blower. Usually I blow the CCD surface wuth the camera "looking for the floor" (I guess in that way the dust no come back to the CCD (usually I turn off the camera three minutes before do the clean.
I still have 9 swabs but I'm so far of Seattle.
I hope you can clean it! I understand you!
I hate to clean the CCD!!!!!!!!!!!

Teski, have you tried wiping it down with distilled water? Maybe it'll help to clear out any leftover residue remaining on the sensor.

I haven't tried that. What would you put the water on? I have some pec pads that came with the eclipse solution.

Thanks my friend...I wish you were closer to Seattle. :-) Ya, I used my blower first, then put the drops on the swab and swiped one side and then back on the other side. Did that twice and got left with a streak and a bunch of gunk.

I plan to buy more swabs and talk to Fuji tomorrow, but am worried about leaving any of this stuff on my CCD overnight.

Did you get any Pec Pads with the cleaning solution?? I Did!

You can fabricate a swab using a piece of clear plastic that they use for "blister packs". Cut a piece about as wide as the CCD and 6" or so long.

Put a PecPad over the bottom and cut it a little wider than the strip and secure it with a small rubberband. TAH-DAH!

Hi Teski,

Your sensor will be fine. The first time is always the worst and for me it took three swabs to get it clean the 1st time. I blow my sensor and lenses off twice a week. Usually streaks will appear when to much solution is used or the sensor has builup and is real dirty. Alot depends on the enviorment your in when changing lenses and the frequency in cleaning your sensor. Hope you get your swabs and finish the job cause it is alittle nerv-wrecking til its clean like you want it.

I feel for you !

I was just reading that a few minutes ago...Of course I'm a little sketchy about doing a total workaround now that the recommended method didn't work for me. I don't have a problem waiting until tomorrow to get more swabs, but I'm worried about leaving this stuff on the CCD overnight.

Teski;

I used the modified rubbermaid spatula discribed on this url with a pec-pad and eclipse solution on my S2 and it worked fine.

You can probably use one of those sensor clean pads that you already have, or perhaps anything microfiber and lint-free (I didn't say this! :-). I would try boiling some water and collecting a little bit of the water vapor. It'll be pure water so it won't harm anything. Wipe it a couple of times, gently and blow with your mouth until the water dries.

No gaurantee, but worth a try to clear out the streaks.

You might try folding the PecPad for a double thickness. This will give you a larger area of contact and pick up more dust on a pass.
Also find a stiffer piece of that plastic. Something that will bend slightly.

THanks...That gives me some relief. I'm one of those Murphy's Law people. I think something will go wrong, and it does. :-) I may try and turn a pec pad into a swab, but if the CCD will be fine until tomorrow, I may wait.

Thanks for posting!

......I sense your concern. (Funny thing is, I just today cut a Wendy's knife in preparation to use it with Pec Pads for cleaning my sensor this coming week.)

Important thing is not to panic. Don't use distilled water.....the whole idea of the Eclipse solution is that it evaporates faster than almost any other liquid. Water will remain on the sensor too long.

There shouldn't be much danger in waiting overnight to try cleaning again. If you're more comfortable using the swabs, then it should be fine to wait and buy some new ones.

On the other hand, fashioning a tool for use with the Pec Pads will also work. It's your call really.

Remember, it's apparently REALLY important to use only two drops of the solution.

Here's hoping your CCD will be spic and span as soon as you do the cleaning once more.

I'll be rooting for you.

Best wishes,

David

Thanks,
Teski,

What you need is alcohol. Yeah, alcohol. Maybe a little, maybe a lot. If you've got a bad problem, I'd suggest trying to keep calm about the sensor's dirty, messy state tonight, Sunday night, and just go down to a local grocery store that's open now and get some alcohol. Just look for the kind that says 3.2 to 5.5 percent alcohol by volume on the side of the can or bottle. I'd recommend looking at either Samuel Adams or Anchor Steam or maybe Budweiser or Miller Genuine Draft. Beer is one of the better kinds of alcohol to use, since it keeps you busy,uh,doing things. As for how much to use, let's say between 40 ounces and 80 ounces, and if the sensor problem is RREALLY bad, maybe even 120 ounces of the 3.2 to 5.5 percent kind. Whatever it takes to get this problem off your mind, use that amount of alcohol. Then the messy sensor problem will be all taken care of for tonight.

I wish you good luck, and hope you can make it through this trying time until you can re-stock on the needed cleaning supplies! I feel bad for you.
