Just recieved this message from Dell in my email. I ordered within the first 2 hours of the original Dell thread on this forum.

Thank you for your reply. I apologize for the delay in response to your e-mail. We are very backlogged with e-mails received and are working hard to answer all e-mails in a timely manner.

After reviewing the records I show that we will not be able
to ship your order until 04/16/2003. We apologize for this

inconvenience, and are doing everything we can to get your order out to you as quickly as possible. As always, you may cancel your order at any time prior to shipment by calling 1-800-449- 3355 (extension: - 62470) and we will promptly process a refund for your order. Alternately, you may place an order for a substitute product.

I thank you for your patience and understanding, they are both greatly appreciated.

...as a photography supplier. I ordered 2 CF cards from them, and I got 3 emails like yours, delaying it over 5 weeks. I finally called and cancelled the order...and then it arrived the next day! I then called to ask about returning, and I am waiting for them to send me an envelope. Grrrrrrrr.

I love Dell computers; wouldn't have any other kind. But Dell ain't cameras...

It's never been their main line of business.

Selling printers and digital point/n/shoots probably makes sense for them, but not digital SLR's.

And anytime there's a "run" on a "good deal", you can bet the computer dealers are going to run out before camera dealers. At least I hope so. I'd hate to think that Dell was getting 10D's while camera dealers couldn't get it.

Boy, what a screwed up system. Nobody seems to be on the same page. As luck would have it my server is down for my credit card company so I'm not even sure if they charged me.

There's no difference between a DSLR and a P&S (or a printer for that matter) as far as Dell is concerned. You're just as likely to get screwed either way. All people are looking for here is a good order-processing system. It doesn't make any difference what kind of item you're ordering.

was all "no problem, it'll ship today or Friday" when I emailed him Thursday...

then the silence on Friday was deafening. No responses to the emails I left on Friday.

shrug It's like the story of the Indian and the Snake. I went in knowing what Dell's like, and have an alternate source.

For what it's worth, I have ordered two Simpletech memory cards from them over the last couple months and both times they shipped them before their online order tracking system could keep up -- the one I had shipped overnight literally was in my hands before their tracking system quit saying "InProduction".

So we'll see what happens. I'm sure there'll be lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth this week as either Dell comes through and folks who bailed wail about the lying sales reps who told them April 15th, or Dell won't come through and folks who stuck with them wail about the lying sales reps who told them March 17th. ;}

Any DSLR beats unexposed film.

than to see a post on the forum Monday morning screaming that "Dell came through!!" Heck, I hope I can post it. Lots of doom and gloomers! I'm not sure anyone knows what the heck is going on at that company. They're telling a different story to everyone and creating a lot of confusion. You'd think that a company that prides itself in controlling inventory and is renown for the same could - CONTROL THEIR INVENTORY!

Still, perhaps unwarrantedly, crossing my fingers. I'll wait till Monday evening.

I've sold my G3 and my A2. All I have left for a trip to Florida is my trusty Olympus Epic which I love for a film point and shoot. I guess when I'm in Florida I can borrow my Dad's Canon S45 if he'll part with it!
then the silence on Friday was deafening. No responses to the
emails I left on Friday.

Did we ever get a firm answer on the number of 10D's that Dell "had in stock", or most likely as we know now - might get in stock Tomorrow?

I seem to remember people replying on the Mega-thread that they had "40", "50", and I think someone even said "250".

Even taking the large number into account, I'd bet that they still took somewhere between 300-500 orders in the few hours the word got out - considering the firestorm it created here alone - and someone mentioned that the word also went out on usenet.

Bottom line - Dell doesn't have a real-time inventory and order reservation system - many people placed orders from one of the hundreds of salespeople for the "in stock" item, as it stated on the screen - meanwhile, I'm sure that all of the cameras were sold within the first 30 minutes.

Its interesting that you've been offered to cancel your order - as I was told on Friday afternoon that I couldn't cancel my order as "it has been invoiced and is in production." BTW, I ordered within 20 minutes of the news breaking here...

I too ordered in the first 30 minutes and my order status still says delayed until 3/17. I vividly remember the rep saying it would definitely ship on or before the 17th.

It would sure be nice if everyone would just chill out and give Dell a chance to come through with the time frame which they previously stated.

I'm still going to wait through tomorrow at least and see what happens. After that, who knows...I may just wait until 4-16 the savings of having to pay the full 1500 plus CA sales tax(if I bought in a shop) will be upwards of $250. That may be worth the wait.

I have read similar stories regarding Dell and their inability to accurately forecast supply and demand. Just one more shinning example.
