Trying to save some money I've been over in the Canon forums. Nothing personal but the new 10d is very appealing at this price point. Those who remeberer me a few months back know I loved my rented S2. I thought 6mp is 6MP. Why not put $700.00 into a nice lens? Fact of the matter is...even the Canon people say the S2 is a much better camera. It seems this is NOT like 35mm flame wars, you know that annoying thead (which is better Canon or Nikon). Some of the Canon people have told me the S2 rivals the 1ds. Other say don't you dare get Canon over Fuji. These are Canon loyalist!! Here's typical of their response from the Canon forum.

Hi Joe!

Do not, I repeat, Do not sell your S2 for a 10D, No comparison, the S2 has the best skin, highest res. and best pro features of any of the 6mp's. It resolves as a 8-9 mp camera with the superhoneycomb CCD. I just got my 1Ds and am worried if it will be much better than my S2 that I sold. No way the 10D can touch it.

Jon

So, if you guys will forgive me, I want to come back home. :-)

Hi Joe,

No need to ask, who could blame you !

The 10D does look attractive and I know how it feels to choose between those DSLR's... Could make anybody crazy..

The S2 is a lovely tool and you won't be dissapointed...

Good luck and don't wait forever.. then you miss the fun !

Cheers

Hi Joe,

Not to worry ! It sometimes takes events like you have been thru to get clarity in your vision. Down the road you will have been much better off as a result of gone thru this. Just think if you would have purchased the camera and found out the harder way.

Your always welcome here !

Joe,

Omigosh! Do you mean to tell us there are some rational, thinking Canon users who are actually touting the Fuji S2's capabilities? Over the capabilities and end-results of a Kwanon camera? (grin) That's very interesting. But then again, isn't the new 10D just a D60 sensor with a better AF module, more tone and saturation control over that pallid Canon color pallette, and a magnesium chassis?

I find it interesting Canon's tried to associate its $1500 amateur digital SLR with its two pro-class models by number-association....this camera was allegedly going to be called the D80 according to the rumour mill, but instead Canon pulled a cool stunt and named it "almost" identically to the 1D and 1Ds, probably to confuse and trade upon the name the Canon 1D and 1Ds have made.

Canon's awfully good at trying to trade on name mis-association....Nikon invented the first sub-$18,000 digital SLR...called it the Nikon D1. When Canon finally got a true pro D-SLR,one not jointly made with Kodak, and Canon named it the 1D ----which if you ask me, is rather similar to "D1",dontcha' think? (As Canon did when they traded upon the Nikon F's name. The Nikon F was followed, years later, by the Canon F1,and then when it was fianlly made better, with electronic timing and automation, the Canon F1n).

When Nikon got a better sensor in the same body they called the D1's follow-ups either D1x or a D1h. But Canon puts a new shell and some better controls around the same sensor from last year and calls a re-worked D60 a 10D? Talk about trying to trade on name mis-association in the mass market!

Yeah Joe,please do listen to the Canon users who are trying to steer you to a higher-resolution camera with a lively, pleasing, vibrant color palette for wedding photography use. And I'd sure welcome you to the S2 'club'. And good luck with your digital weddings. Maybe check out Gary Fong's site, which is chock-full of S2 wedding shooter tips and tricks. Good luck and good shooting!

Thanks guys. Sometimes you have to look around. I bought into the hype. While I don't usually shoot at maximum resolution of the S2 anyway beacause of storage issues it's nice to know it's there. I have to have those skin tones. It's wedding season now and it's time to get serious. Some of the cutomers want 16x20's as in bridals. That's when 4256 x 2848 will come in handy.

I'm selling off my tradional darkoom, other film camera's etc. I may keep my Pentax 645 rig as a backup. Some customers still want film. Ewew! The color on the S2 is better than any film I have ever used. But for those customers who want true B&W it's hard to beat MF film. Digital just does make it for me.

and you will be fine ...

Have fun

Satisfaction is the end of progress.

Yeah I was suprised too that the "Cannonites" said go Fuji. Among that group over there it's a feeding frenzy over the the 10d. Better low light AF, new body style but basically a d60 with some uh o's fixed at a lower price point. But ith prices droppng to 2k for an S2, it doesn't make sense to buy Canon. Sure they toughted better battery life, yes I know. The 10d does appear to have a cleaner improved sensor and some very cool features like "auto clean", image oreintation support for larger media cards etc. The color though looks less saurated to me. I could never get a straight answer if the latude was greater. The 10d will sell like hot cakes no question about that. It will bring more people into the digtial world.

I'm a computer guy. I have high a end system with a high end sound system in my computer. I own the Klipsh Promedia 5.1's. I know this has nothing to do with photography but wait. Klipsch is the S2 of computer speakers. Many companies "claim" their product are "Klipsch Killers". None have succeded so far in matching them. No-one one has clamied the 10d is the "S2 killer". Even Canon can't compete.

Hello Joe,

Trust me, you are not the only one that considered such options. Listings for $1300 and the like are very tempting (after all a thousand dollars is a lot of $$), but after looking at the images I have with my S2- I quickly snapped out of it :)

Mr. Stacey,

Hey I know that photo! :-). Yes I had good luck the the S2. That's custom white balanced from 3050 to 5500 Kelvin shooting Karshs' fresnels. I'm still shooting those same old boring things with that really lousy S2 color.

I posted something in your used S2 thread last night...No worries man! You were just trying to do what was right for you. Now pickup an S2 and get going again! :-)

Take care,

Teski

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

I wasn't thinking of going to the 10D, but I had been thinking that the quality difference might not be as wide as I would like for the price difference. Now I feel a whole lot better.

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those that understand binary & those that don't.

Derrel,

I see what you mean Canon trying to associate the 10D with their pro level 1D/1Ds, however, I am not totally in agreement with the view that the 1D was derived from Nikon's D1. My reasoning is because the 1D was a digitally modified EOS-1v body, hence EOS-1D ;-) But intentionally or not, lots of posts in dpr do incorrectly refer to the 1D as D1 and vice versa.

Ah, just remembered, there is another range of canon cameras with the same name as another successful range of cameras - the Canon G1,G2 vs Contax G1,G2. You're right Derrel!
