Dell is the Devil

They did me this way last year also on a D60. I just cancelled my order. Got an email from the salesman saying cancelled. Bought a 1D. Two months later a D60 shows up at my door. My son signs for it not knowing. It then took me two months to get Dell take it back and get the charges off my card. The credit card company finaily had to do that for me.
I just don't deal with Dell any more.

Lying salesmen and poor service.

VL

I am normally a very calm, somewhat intelligent person. But trying
to order a 10D has become a nightmare. I was burned by Dell last
year with the D60 and should have known better this time around. I
was at the top of the list at both Ritz and Onecall when Dell's
price broke on Wednesday. I called five minutes after Nguyen
posted and Dell guaranteed they were in stock (three times) and
sent a confiming email shortly thereafter and they put a reserve on
my Visa card. At that point I canceled with Ritz and Onecall.
Then there were the notices of delays and after several hours I was
told that they had taken orders for 250 but only had fifty in stock
and I would't get one until April 15 at the earliest. I called
back several times but could never get to talk with a supervisor.
I don't think this place has any management anyway. I canceled my
order and they stated they would free up the Visa amount within a
couple of hours. It's now Friday and there is still a hold on that
amount from Dell.

The set-up at Dell is extremely poor. They have no real time
information and they haven't improve at all after last year's
fiasco. They promise the world and deliver absolutely nothing.

I'm not buying from Dell. I'm buying from Canon. Dell just happens
to be the cheapest middleman I can find. If something goes wrong
with my camera, Canon will fix it, wherever I bought it. Once Dell
works out their supply issues, I save about $300. Saving $300 is a
big deal, at least to me. I've already got a D30. It's no sweat to
wait awhile. John
...until you are having a subtle problem like front/back-focusing and Canon just sends the camera back, and it is impossible for you to reach the guy in charge of the repair.

Trust me, while you do save some dollars you also give up a lot of convenience. Your local shop knows that you won't buy from them again unless they provide good service.

Cheers,

Erik

There is only one reason you continue to buy cameras from Dell - no one else is giving a 10%+10% discount off the 10D, and that's why you go to Dell.

Sorry friends. You can have best service or lowest price, but it is very very rare that you will get both at the same time.

Spare a thought for us in the UK. Lowest advertised price so far on 10D is £1238 ($1980 at today's ForEx rate)

When we all ordered from Dell on Wednesday I believe we were all told that the camera would ship on or before 3/17. I keep seeing posts that the date keeps changing from 3/17 to 3/18 and so on. 3/17 isn't until Monday and alot of you guys have been crying since Wednesday.

Before you start bashing Dell, why don't you wait until 3/17 like we were all told and see what happens.

These threads are like cancer and keep spreading. Give it a rest!!

I agree that IF you can wait, then buying from Dell makes sense.

But if you're in a hurry (as many apparently were, being on TWO other waiting lists), then ordering from Dell, and then cancelling the two other orders (BEFORE confirmed shipping) is a bit crazy, IMO.

My order was in production, also. One of their agents did a little more digging and admitted that I would not get mine before 4/13. I ordered mine at about 12:30 pst on Wednesday. So if you ordered yours after that I don't think you will be seeing it soon.

Someone commented that when you get on a waiting list you are promising to buy the camera. That really isn't true. Companies realize that circumstances change, most don't charge your credit card and they confirm you still want the item before they ship it. After the D60 shortages, I wanted to get on a couple of lists. I don't think this was wrong.
Especially if your order is in production... Was told that in
production means it is available and is being packaged.

The only circumstance I can see where local pays is catastrophic failure, where you walk in with a dead parrot, and they immediately swap you a new bird. That's a valuable service, but realistically, what are the odds?

I don't believe in Lemons, not in mass produced products, employing well proven technology. It either works, or it doesn't, and in either case, you'll figure that out almost immediately. If it doesn't work, Canon quality assurance will be at least as interested as I am in figuring out why not.

Given a minor maladjustment, like your front-focusing example, the guys in my local camera shop aren't likely to swap me cameras, and there's no way they're opening my camera to fix it. Even if they wanted to, I wouldn't let them. It's in the nature of the product that nobody has any alternative to Canon factory service. The local guys are taking my verbal description of the problem, writing it down (and maybe misinterpreting the problem somehow), boxing up the whole mess, and shipping it off to CFS-Irvine. I can do that better than they can.

I don't know, Erik. Each point of view has it's merits, and I like the idea of supporting my local business people. Only problem is, they want $300, and I don't like them that much. They're just your typical Mall-Mice. They don't seem particularly friendly. They don't seem to have any particular expertise. Their entire raison d'etre seems to be squeezing maximum commision out of every possible transaction. Maybe if I found a better store, I would feel different, but that entails a full day excursion. Heck with 'em. I'll keep my $300, and take my chances online.

Wish me luck...;-) John

There is some craziness to be the first one to post new and improved catpix, and horribly noisy 15 minute closet shots. I think I can live without that kind of attention. Once the reviews are in, it's just another camera...;-)

Yeah, all you poor suckers. You think getting a camera from Dell is hard, try ordering an actual computer. Go to the Dell site, Service and Support, Customer Care, Community and see what computer buyers are saying. And, oh, that bit about "In production" - that means anything from pushing your purchase down the aisle toward shipping to waiting for parts from Malaysia. Good luck!
Especially if your order is in production... Was told that in

You guys are absolutely nuts. First of all, the 17th has not yet arrived, so its more than premature to be bashing Dell for not shipping on the promised date. Second, the suggestion that it is somehow worth an extra $150 to have a camera a few days, even a month in advance is just stupid. And don't give me the line about pro photographers needing to have the camera sooner so the money being worth it. Pros are using the 1D or the 1Ds or a D60 for that matter. I highly doubt there is anyone out there who's business hinges upon the timely delivery of the 10D.

I can relate to the desire to get a new toy in hand as qickly as possible, but this frenzy is out of control. The same thing happened with the D60. Folks were paying $2500 on ebay to get the camera sooner. Now those same people are probably kicking themselves for going out of their way to pay way too much for a camera that's already discontinued.

If you have to wait to get the camera, wait. In the mean time, take the camera you have, go out, take some pictures and stop complaining that the company that is providing the best deal on your new camera might not ship on the expected date two days from now.

Read the posts on Monday and see if they ship. You don't have to wait a month. Relax

I feel the same way you do! I want to get my camera at or near the 17th but I don't hing any bets on it. I was going to use my check card to pay for it because I have the extra cash but ended up using my credit card to pay for it. I look at it this way they are giving me an extra 150 bucks to pay the balance of my credit card as opposed to going someplace else and paying the full 1500. If it doesn't come by the 30th then that is when I will worry. My 3rd son is to be born near that time and I want to record the moment. Wherever you go there is a crapshoot on the promise of delivery because in canon's ordering system they take orders first come first serve, so wherever you go your taking a chance.
