I am normally a very calm, somewhat intelligent person. But trying to order a 10D has become a nightmare. I was burned by Dell last year with the D60 and should have known better this time around. I was at the top of the list at both Ritz and Onecall when Dell's price broke on Wednesday. I called five minutes after Nguyen posted and Dell guaranteed they were in stock (three times) and sent a confiming email shortly thereafter and they put a reserve on my Visa card. At that point I canceled with Ritz and Onecall. Then there were the notices of delays and after several hours I was told that they had taken orders for 250 but only had fifty in stock and I would't get one until April 15 at the earliest. I called back several times but could never get to talk with a supervisor. I don't think this place has any management anyway. I canceled my order and they stated they would free up the Visa amount within a couple of hours. It's now Friday and there is still a hold on that amount from Dell.

The set-up at Dell is extremely poor. They have no real time information and they haven't improve at all after last year's fiasco. They promise the world and deliver absolutely nothing.

Did you finally get your D60 last year after ordering with Dell?
I was involved in the same situation and they did deliver as promised.

I just called Dell and would not take the answer of it will ship on the 17th. I kept pushing and pushing filnally they told me it will be delayed at least 15 days.

I am very mad at Dell right now.

Why bother? It keeps happening over and over and over.... It happened with the D60, it happened with the Sony 717, it happened to me with the Sony 707 and now the 10D. In each case getting the camera was a fiasco. I would never ever order anything like this from them. How does it go? burn me once same on you, burn me 4 times, shame on?????

I canceled a Dell 10D order this week because of the same con. They told me that the cancellation would not be complete for another 24hours and that if I received it within that period I would have to ship it back. I asked if they were in stock and he said not until April. LOL Oh well I called Visa and stopped any charges from Dell.

Is one reason I resisted the urge to jump on the Dell discount, though for those getting their camera's in a timely enough fashion to satisfy them it's a good price. For me though Dell would have charged sales tax as well so in the end the great price would have become a decent price, and to be honest I'm at a point in my life that getting the absolute cheapest price simply is not worth it. Lot to be said for getting the service you want and the convenience of that service. And of course there is a price to be paid for that but I've never felt great about giving $1400 to a business and then not be able to make a phone call, wait a reasonable period and actually talk to a human being who had have a wit. The 10D is a hot commodity and seekign large dsicounts this early on is bound to translate to a big chance of having your order pushed back. And heaven forbid it arrive damaged or if it has a few extra hot pixels! I'll probably pay a little extra ( $1499 + tax ) and buy locally. Who knows , might make the lens buying decisions easier having established a relationship with a local seller! Now, if only Best Buy carried these things lol I have a 20% coupon with them wihtout many restrictions :))

Is your order "in production"? I keep calling, and they keep saying it's scheduled to ship on or before the 17th. I'll keep my order in until then, then go from there...

I don't understand why Dell and Gateway even HAVE digital SLR's for sale. Digital point/n/shoots I can understand. But SLR's ?

I can't imagine them ever having much stock of a digital SLR, so they are unprepared for a deluge of orders when it's "announced" that they have a "deal" on a website like this.

I think all of them are just acting as front ends for a big distributor like Ingram micro. They take the order and it gets dropped shipped from the distributor with a custom-printed shipping label that makes it look like it came from the company you ordered from.

a box is a box, no matter what's printed on it: 10D or S40.

I got 3 D60's from Dell in early September, they delivered earlier than what was stated in their "Delayed" thing.

But why would Ingram Micro deal in SLR's ?

Whenever you buy from something from a place that doesn't have that something as part of its main business, you're asking for problems. Especially if the order is a result of an internet-based "hey, lookie at this deal!" scenario.

If Ingram Micro were the distributor to a bunch of real camera stores, that'd be different.

The difference is in their expected orders, and thus their current stock levels.

Everybody and his dog sells digital point/n/shoots . . . and a lot of them.

Not so for digital SLR's.

They deal in all kinds of stuff. Some places show exactly how many are in stock of a given item at the distributor. You'd be amazed. You can look an a really obscure item that 99.99% of the people in the world would never have heard of and they will have thousands of them in stock.

I'm not buying from Dell. I'm buying from Canon. Dell just happens to be the cheapest middleman I can find. If something goes wrong with my camera, Canon will fix it, wherever I bought it. Once Dell works out their supply issues, I save about $300. Saving $300 is a big deal, at least to me. I've already got a D30. It's no sweat to wait awhile. John
