I received my new Epson 850z digital camera today. I ordered it from CDW. This is a nice looking camera. I can't wait to test it out.

Bob -

I'm GREATLY interested in this camera as well!

If you don't mind, would you post up some unaltered raw images from the camera? This would really be of benefit to potential new buyers to see exactly what the camera is capable of independent of outside software. Please let us know either your URL or your CLUB PHOTO web site.

If you'd like to post a mini-review, that would be really cool as well. There are also excellent user review sites such as the one at:
http://www.pcphotoreview.com/dc/reviews/user.htm

I'm really looking forward to seeing some of your images. If you do post them up, can you manage to get a mix of daytime shots, indoor shots, macros, and some (predominantly) high resolution along with a few corresponding Hypict images so that we can compare equivalent scenes at both resolutions?

Hope you have the time to answer our excitement on this one.

How do you like the body of the camera? Does it feel reliably well-built? Any initial things that irk you about the camera out of the box?

Share, share!! :)

CDW is selling it for FULL RETAIL $799 (!!!) OUCH!

That means they must really have it in stock and know they're the only ones.

For a second, there, I thought that you'd posted a bogus message of all quotes since it was all colored red by the forum.

Thanks for looking into that? I wonder if this is their usual policy? If so, I'd be happy to buy from them even if the price is a little higher than at other places.

Now, if only Bob would post up some images at a web site for us to review!! Hope the images are somewhat better than those from the PhotoPC 800. Those are OK, but I'd like to see slightly more color saturation and better white balance.
I've never bought from CDW. Please define "no bull". :)
And I can't wait for your review and sample pics.
hey...just called cdw and they are shipping...overnight with a no bull 30
day return policy
ulysses......no bull means they will credit your card with no restocking fee.

They have me to busy today to try and post some pictures. The picture quality seems exceptional. But, I am no expert. The camera as an auto lens cover. In quick picture mode. It can take one picture per second in high res mode 1600X1200. At less that high res mode it can take 2 pictures per second.

After the picture is taken you can view the settings the camera used to take the picture. The camera is ready to take pictures in under 3 seconds from when you turn it on. The LCD is very clear and seems to be well lit. The solar assist is pretty cool. The camera came with a decent user manual, even a lens adapter, batteries and charger and much more.

There also seems to be a large number of different lens that you can buy for this camera.
At High Picture mode 1984 X 1488 the pictures seem close to perfect to me.
In macro mode the pictures also look very good.

I just got my Midwest Micro magazine yesterday and it was in thier catalog . Only ones I have seen so far that had it advertised. BUT then they are also asking full retail at 799.99 so I am going to be patient and wait for mine to get here from buy.com.

My rep at CDW gave it to me $700 because I told him I ordered the camera at Onsale.com for only $656 but I am willing to pay more for fast delivery. His name is Stan ext.7569
I should have overnight delivery instead of 2nd day. Really can't wait.

Does this camera have any manual shutter/aperture?
Does the playback have a zoom function?
Is there an uncompressed Tiff option?
How do you like the MENU functions?
Body made of???

Yes to all of your questions except uncompressed Tiff option. The camera body is made out of metal. Seems to be very solid. The menu functions are easy to understand and use. The weather here is not very good and I have been to busy or I would have tried to post some pictures.

Yes I paid around that price also. The 850z seem to be excellent to me. I would expect Epson to have a shortage of these cameras soon. So if you can get one now don't wait. Amy I think you are going to really like your new camera.

I think you are referring to this earlier comment:

"If you right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and click properties a window will open. Under the general tab you'll see system as the first in the column. If you see a B after the number you can use USB with no problems.

I remember the first USB device I attempted to use under Win95B. It didn't work! I received an error message stating that an .inf file could not be found. An .inf is an initializtion file. Without it the port wont be initialized even if it's there. If you get that error message, go to Microsofts site and do a search for that file. Make sure you write the exact name of it down and where it was supposed to be if you see that error message. The file won't work if you "install it anywhere other than where the operating system (Win95B) is looking for it. I believe it's supposed to be in C:\Windows\System. Today, most devices will install this file, amongst others."

Hope this helps...Harvey

According to the following link CDW charges a 15% restocking fee for non-defective items. Buy.com and multiple other online retailers do not charge the 15% FEE. Onsale also charges 15%. I'll wait for a couple of weeks until buy.com has it in stock to save the $50-$150 and then rest assured I can return it.

I just returned my Olympus 2000 3 weeks after purchasing now that the 850z is out and the Oly 2020 will be out in a month or two.

hi Bob

Some questions regarding the Epson... does it allow for manual focusing?

If so, how good or how bad is it? Also, is the lens threaded so that a 3rd
party lens addon can be used such as filter, telephoto, and Wideangle?

Btw, how much noise is there in low light situations? And how good is the buit
in flash ?

Are there any ISO settings? (Ie. 100, 200, 400, etc.?)

And how long does the 4 batteries last for upon full charge?

How much barrel distortion are there in the pics?

Finally, how is the quality of the LCD screen? Ability to see in bright sunlight
and refresh rate and resolution?

Any additional points you like to make (bad comments) about the camera?

Thanks for any info you can give

Cheers
