I am looking for something compact and light for my next vacation. I don't mind paying for quality (titanium), but I think maybe at 45" extension the compact tripods will not extend enough. Will I regret this extended length for scenic shots or shall I go with something that only folds down to 20" and weighs several pounds more? It will have to support a DSLR with medium telephoto around 3-5lbs max is my guess. I'm nearly 6'3", which makes it worse.

Check out the Cullmann "Magic." Opens to 57", folds to less than 14", very light. I've been carrying one around for 14 years. Used to use it with a 35mm pentax slr and a 70-210 zoom, so should handle what you're looking for. You won't regret it.

John,

Thanks for the tip. I must have missed it when I went to B & H, although I was searching through the compact (less than 12") tripods. 14" doesn't sound bad. Yes, I think Cullmann makes a great product. Thanks again.

Their store is definately "information overload." :)

If I recall correctly, they are toward the very back of the store to the right. Closesest to the back in the whole tripod section, and on the opposite side of the rack with a lot of Bogen tripod stuff.

have you used the "MAgic" as a Monopod. If yes, how does it compare to other monopod.

I like a Velbon 345e. It extends to a little over 5 feet and with a DSLR on top I find it easy to use. (I amd 6'1") It only folds to about 18" but it's sturdy enough to hold my D60 with a 100-400 Canon lens. (I do hang my camera bag from the ring to make it steadier.) I also like the ball head, but if you don't, the 374 has a pan head.

Haven't really used it that way much. Slightly taller as a monopod. Only advantages I've seen to a monopod are smaller size, and not as many legs to be kicked. It's small enough to be no trouble to carry, and I tend to avoid crowds, so not worried about the legs...
