Since using MS Outlook under MS Office XP, I've frustrated by the way it handles jpg files attached to email messages. When I receive an email with a jpg photo file attached, the photo isn't displayed in the message window like Netscape used to. To look at the attachment files I have to right click on the message and click view attachment. JPG files result in one of my Photo editors being opened which is inconvenient. How can I make MS Outlook display the attachments?

Is this a security issue with Viruses? Seems MS Outlook screens a lot of attachments sent to me by email.

Thanks,

AFAIK MS Outlook uses the same settings as Internet Explorer. It really wonders me why you can't see the attachments.

I use Office 2000 and there are a few options there you may have to change. I'm not sure if these are present in the XP version:
  • Tools> Options> Security> Zone (choose "internet" instead of "restricted"). You can browse the security settings for "internet" and try to find any settings with JPG.
  • Tools> Options> Security> Attachment security - set it to "none" and see if your problem goes away. However, it is not good to keep it at "none", so set it back eventually.
It perhaps helps to clear your history in IE. This sometimes solves a strange problem related to not being able to save JPG. Perhaps this is a similar problem.

Also, make sure to have the latest version of IE installed. I think that Outlook uses the IE engine for rendering the content in emails.

Hope that helps,

I don't think this is a feature of Outlook 2002. It is, however, in Outlook Express.

Thanks Janis, I did that but found the Windows Picture viewer the best option, but this still opens the photos in a new window rather than in the body of the email. Netscape simply showed the photos as part of the email body, no clicking or selecting the individual images like it appears Outlook does.

I just tried Outlook Express, it displays the image in the message body. I thought the Express version was simply a Lite Version of MS Outlook. But maybe the Express is better. Since I paid for MS Outlook in the MS Office XP package it must be better. I guess it's just one of those wierd MS design features that cripple the full paying customers in favour of the masses of freeware users.

Outlook Express is designed for home users getting mail from an ISP. Outlook 2002 is designed for corporate customers using Exchange as their email server. There are different requirements, as you might imagine, for both market segments.

I'm starting to see that. Why I'm starting to regret using MS Outlook is because I appear to have missed quite a bit of business email from potential clients that have sent me email with attachments. Just last week I noticed a highlighted bar above the message that said:
"Outlook blocked access to the following potentially unsafe attachments"

As a result I missed an opportunity to pick up a new client. Now I think I'll attempt to export my email over to Outlook Express. Or maybe head back over to Netscape that served me very well for 5 years prior to jumping onto the MS IE and Outlook stream. Is Netscape 7 usable? Netscape 6 wasn't very good for me and Netscape 4.7x was failing to display a lot of sites.

This is something completely different.

Outlook Express will automatically allow you to view jpegs in the body of the message. Outlook 2002 will not. Jpegs will just show up as attachments.

Blocking of potentially unsafe attachments will happen in both Outlook 2002 and Outlook Express. However, this is a user configurable option.

In Outlook Express, you can change the setting by going to Tools, Options, Security and changing it there.

In Outlook 2002, you can change it by following the instructions here - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb ;en-us;290497. Jpegs and other pictures are not blocked though as the pose no security risks due to viruses.

But by doing this, you need to be sure you have virus protection in place because someone can send you an executable and Outlook no longer protects you from opening these potentially harmful executables.
