Hi

I am considering buying the new Canon S50 (5 Megapixel) for doing serious stock photography work, any feedback from anyone?, I have heard of the Canon EOS D-60, but it is a bit beyond my budget. I am just concerned about the size of the lens of the S50 as small compared to Digital SLRs, although I know the picture quality is excellent.

Thank you.

Have a look at this page, and study the flower pictures from S45 and S50:

The S45 image is blurred on the left side, the S50 on the right. Whatever the deeper reason for this, one may indeed say that they are as sharp as blahhhh, to use your expression. I am looking elsewhere for my next camera.

Canon G3 just dropped to $699. Even it has 4 mp, but got a hot-shoe, brigher lens, and flip/switch LCD screen. S50 will be $599, tough call, but it's your call.

serious stock photography, with a sub-compact? I own the S45 and my vote is for the G3 also, more flexibility, period.

I am also looking very forward to two or three from now, so that I can get my hands on an S50. I also am planing on buying this camera for stock photography among other things. It looks great! The only thing is that I heard it won't be black outside of American or something. I want a black one!!

Although I'd probably lean toward the G3 here also, don't be so quick to dismiss the sub-compacts. I actually know people selling stock with reputable houses taken with S30s and S40s. If your interests are in stills, particularly, where you've got the time and environmental control, the differences between S & G series become less important.

my suggestion.Buy the s45 or s50!
all this talk of g3 beeing more flexible is just nonsence
as phil askey writes in his review:"s45 has the same manual controls as the g3"!
picture quality is as good on s45 as on g3!
but s45 and s50 is a portable digicam

Hey all

Thanks for all the feedback, its just the D60 is a bit pricey. I know the G3 is excellent, read so many reviews on it, but im just leaning towards more pixels (5MP+), just in case for enlargements and bigger TIFF files. I've heard so many good things about the D60 also. The smaller lens should'nt make a difference (I hope not...lol).

I wouldn't worry too much about 5MP vs 4MP. The 5MP camera would let you print images just 12% wider/taller at the same resolution.

From what I have been able to father, the G2/G3 only has an advantage over the S40/S45 if you have to use it in dim light or with a flash. Using aperture priority and stopping the lens down to f/4, the S30/40/45/50 lens is perfectly sharp. So I think its a good idea to get it for is pocketable size. It is a very serious camera, with just about all the options available on the G3 except the lens and flash shoe.
The S50 will give you greater sharpness than the G3 due to the higher res CCD.

For some corner sharpness examples:

Much as I wanted to praise the S50, Todd L has a point. The S50 is
just the wrong camera for stock photography; the G3 is better
suited to the job.
