i wanted to know if anybody used a PDA as a portable device to view their images. I would like to get a pda so that i wouldn't have to carry my camera around. Also i would prefer a PDA that accepts Compact Flash...

Sony's Clie series has great screens (320 x 480 in some). I have the NR70V and love it. It doesn't accept CF, but their NX and NZ series do, and have the same, or better, screens.

I second what Joe said. Go with a Dell or Toshiba since both have models with CF slot built in. With Compaq you have to attach a cradle-thingy to use CF :-(

Plus the Dells are very affordable.

except for CF Wireless card (that they haven't provided the driver for). So, you CAN'T use Clie for storing images on CF card. Dell Pocket PC will let you do that.

Remember most PDAs have minimal storage capacity. Pocket PC based PDAs have upwards of 64 mb of memory and some have additional on board memory (RAM vs ROM.) Not alot for photos. Some allow the use of CF/SM/SD cards. That is where you would realize the storage capacity to store and then view photos. If your intentio is to use the PDA as viewer I would select a PDA that utilizes the same storage medium as your camera.

Additionally, there is photo software available for some the PDAs that allow you to some editing and viewing of photos.

If you want both CF slot and built-in 802.11b, Toshiba e740 is the only way to go. There's not many competitors that have both features simultaneously on their handhelds.

Conversely, if you don't care about wireless, Dell Axim X5 would suffice.

If you want to use PC Card slots, though, you have to buy an iPaQ with a dual-slot jacket, which could run at more than twice the cost of the 400MHz X5.

Well, this link

will take you to a site that reviews PDA's. Coincidentally, there's a story on CF for Palm devices. Personally, I'd never buy a PDA based on photographic applications. Pics uploaded from my PC look gorgeous on my Clie, but that stuff is secondary to the primary reason for using a handheld: doing useful work.

Pick the operating system that your peers use, then shop for the best form factor (a personal decision based on hands-on fiddling at CompUSA) at your price point. It's not rocket science.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Greg B.
(OTOH, the ability to play MP3's is definitely plays a major role in which PDA!)
